It’s very hard to read from the strange motion capture/animation of the time but the thing I love most about this scene is how shadow looks at sonic in the split second he goes into self defense. That is a look that says “WTFRU?” immediately registering the biggest wrench in his plans to ensure Geralds vengeance.

And in subsequent encounters, though sonic mocks him for trying to copy is look. Shadow is like, no way, I'm older than you. This is just fate’s cruelty to make me doubt the dark path I’ve committed myself to by showing WHAT I Could have been.
