If you're going to use old interviews, you have to put the dates up. People saying that they would vote for Reese 10 games into the season was absolutely understandable. The Fever's record was terrible.
I've explained to others that Reese's game is an independent one. To rebound well, you don't have to know your teammates. Yes, she has to catch the entry pass, but there's very little adjustment for the post player.
Clark plays a pass-heavy game, and in particular she plays a game of anticipation. She throws the ball not to her teammate, but by where she thinks her teammate will be when the ball gets there. This doesn't only require timing and practice with one's own passing, but ALSO requires that you know whether your target is going to move left or right, fast or slow. You need time to gel as a unit before Clark's skills can benefit your team. 10 games into the season, they hadn't seen the benefit yet.
So people saying -- at the time -- that they would vote for Reese over Clark are not a problem to me. The problem for me WOULD BE (but it hasn't happened yet) if the people who say they're voting on team standings and who has lifted their team in wins more between the two seasons reach the end of the year, with the Fever clearly ahead of the Sky, and they still vote for Reese.
Right now, there's no case for Reese to be RotY. But you're not playing interviews recorded today or this week. You're playing interviews from 10, 15, 20 games ago. That's why this video comes across dishonest to me. You don't know what those people will say at the end of the season. You don't even know what they would say today. You're criticizing them for an imaginary vote for an imaginary ROTY award given just a few weeks into the season.
Sports talk shows are just bullshit talk. We all know that. What they said about ROTY was reasonable at the time. Let it go or do the fair thing and put the date up on the screen and critique them on what they knew at the time, not what we all know now. You can't hold them responsible for not predicting the future.
(BTW: Sheryl Swoopes' shit was different, but that wasn't even about RotY. That was about her college career, and she was dead fucking wrong and being a major idiot, but she wasn't even talking about RotY so I have no idea why that interview is here at all. Make a different video is you want to talk about Swoopes' bullshit. Don't throw her into the RotY conversation.)
