Pyrgi Chios Greece
Pyrgi lies 25 km from the city of Chios, is one of the villages maintained as it was built. Features that make the village unique are the narrow streets, numerous churches and the 13th century Byzantine church of the Holy Apostles. Pyrgi has become a preserved monument. The houses are tightly bound to each other to form a compact structure, built that way as protection from the frequent raids by pirates and the Turks. Residents could enter and leave the village only through a door which is currently located at Kato Porta (Lower Door).
