Surface Dial and Cubase Pro 9 - could that work?

An initial examination of using the Surface Dial with Cubase Pro 9 on the Surface Pro 2017. There's some usefulness here but is there enough to make the Dial a useful tool for music production? Not sure at the moment - what do you think? All tips and suggestions welcome and I'll do a more in-depth video later on.

FYI--map the "parameter" to emulate the mouse wheel (scroll up/down)--it will then adjust any Cubase knob/fader that is hovered with the mouse (or in this case selected with your finger. I have done it for years with a Griffin USB Knob. their own "AI knob" is the same thing, only I think scaled a little more to the app.

I keep coming back to my Dial -- every few months I get curious again, try to find a use, and then give up.

One of the problems with customized menus is that modifier keys (shift or ctrl) don't work.

So if, for example, I set "jog" to Shift J and program it, the Dial seems to still send the J command.


So when I turn the wheel my J shortcut -- snap grid on and off -- toggles back and forth even thought the menu is programmed to Shift-J, not unmodified J.

And then it stopped working, so, back on the shelf for you, Dial or Wheel or Puck of whatever. See you in a few months!

Hi, I use Surface Studio 2, excluding MAC vers., to working with Nuendo 12. Could you write MORE DETAILS how exactly setup DIAL in preferences? Basic function - Start-Stop - I found it. But in your Transport features (as 1.) you setup scrolling, I don't know how setup scrolling left and right.
It's very interesting "winding" function (in old Cubase JOG control) . How You made it? Surface Dial is really multifunctional tool. I use it especially to StaffPad. I will be VERY appreciated for your help.
Nevertheless, a few minutes ago I spoke with a chef of Steinberg in Poland exactly to use DIAL in Cubase... That's why I found your Video.

Thanks for your thoughts on something I would also have considered.
I must have missed one of the most important tricks: Using Cubase, I cannot think of a way to move the transport position through the keyboard. How can you make this happen with the dial?

i have problem, why my dial cannot connect with screen surface pro 7, dial keep on center screen if dial touch on top the screen. my surface pro 7 have tempered glass for protection

I have Griffin’s PowerMite which i configured in settings to replicate scroll wheel on mouse and now I can control any parameter I hover mouse cursor over in S1. I dont use touch csreen however Im sure it will work with touch screen by selecting parameter an turning knob because in Ableton for example in order to control parameter with knob hovering over cursor is not enough, i have to manually click on parameter all the time. Hoever this way knob do not work with some plugins that do not support scroll wheel, fo example Native Instrument and this is why Ill be looking at “nOb” controller very soon.

i found the auto focus on your camera to be very distracting. Have you tried manual focus? This would allow you to set the focus distance throughout .

What do you think about checking out new 2in1 Lenovo Miix 520? It is cheaper and probably even better for music production than new surface (at least on paper). It even looks nice.

i have surface book 1 with the last version of W10 and Studio One
i edditing my own commands for specific applications (in settings menu of surface dial)
But when i am on Studio One the surface dial menu stay on the deflault menu
and i have the same issue with others apps (corel draw 2017 for example)

The HANDS ON function "actually" works only with the new surface pro and surface studio by Microsoft

@2:41 Have been doing some experimenting and it seems that cubase often wont react to keyboard modifiers if they are to fast... But if you send a modifier press down, small delay then key, small delay, modifier key up ... it works.. (or at least when i use autohotkey or other scripting tools)...

I prefer a watercooled, i7, widows 7 machine with three large monitors. This PC has practically no latancy. (Novation/ Roland) The old fasioned mouse is much more flexible and reliable. The ablity to drag to a differnt monitor is just too easy.

Your better off with a ShuttleXpress. This was never made for music it is for drawing .. even a korg Nano controller would be better
