Do NOT preorder the diabetes meal on a #flight (You’ll thank Me later)

(Disclaimer; I did not, and I don’t want you to be duped into it by the airline)

As you know, I just got married in Greece a few weeks ago.

It was only the second time I’d left the continent, and I knew there would be food service, so I asked the flight attendant about the meal options.

After discussing that flight, she told me to call the airline and request a diabetic meal for the return flight home to ‘be prepared’.

Given my experience as a dietitian and doing work within hospitals during my dietetic internship, I know the word “diabetic meal” typically means bland, tasteless food that is loaded with carbs and is quite frankly worse for your blood sugar than the alternative (the normal meal).

After doing a bit of research, that was exactly confirmed.

Don’t order the diabetic meal.

Instead, when you board the plane, ask the flight attendant what the meal options are and explain you have type 1 diabetes.

Typically, they’ll share what options exist and more than likely, you’ll have your pick of what you’d like - assuming they are accommodating.

The only other time I left the continent I had a horrible experience with my in-flight meal, but that’s a story for a different day. Let me know if you want to hear it.

What do you normally do for an international flight?✈️👇🏻
