deuterium is actually real. however, Deuterium is one of two stable isotopes of hydrogen, meaning you a) don't need to deplete it and b) it isn't a metal.

The earliest standard issue Boltguns were .60 Cal made for Tigris Pattern Boltguns. These were not strong enough to pierce space marine armour, and proved to be a problem during the Heresy. That's why the .70cal boltgun shell was made for use with Phobos Boltguns to improve armour penetration. The loyalists further upgraded it to .75cal for the current Aquila "Godwyn" pattern bolt weapons while the traitor legions kept using the outdated .60cal - .70cal Tigris and Phobos ammunition.
