The issue I take with Schopenhauer's view here are the states of consciousness available that I am reasonably certain he simply did not have the good fortune of experiencing. Anyone who has taken for example certain entheogenic chemicals, or partaken in significant amounts of Metta or Loving Kindness meditation will likely be aware of possibilities for the human mind, when sufficiently trained, that seem to directly contradict his view of negative happiness. One quite simply does not know what one is missing when it comes to the possibilities of the mind.

Certainly I find his insights deeply valuable in my own life, and I'm well aware that hundreds or thousands of hours of meditation to cultivate psychological well-being resembling a Buddhist monk is just not something most of us are going to be doing any time soon, but I strongly believe there are people living right now with minds that are directly refuting the metaphysical rules Schopenhauer proposed for consciousness.

Only someone who has not experienced true suffering would say such a thing.
