Even though you knew it was coming, John Belushi (as Woody Hayes) punching and strangling Gilda Radner (as Hayes' wife) is as funny as hell.

That is some funny ass shit. Classic Belushi. Something about his timing and body language on physical comedy is beyond description. Legend.

I was at the Gator Bowl that year as a Senior at Clemson. We had no idea what had happened until we got back to the hotel that night. We turned on ABC and saw to our dismay Woody giving Charlie Baumann multiple upper cuts. Two weeks later we were watching SNL, saw this skit, and laughed so hard we fell out of our chairs!!

I have been looking for this clip for years. I’ve described this skit to others, but haven’t seen it for almost half a century.

I hope I'm not the only one here who saw this when it originally ran. It is an all-time SNL skit. The have never been equaled.

Also, I actually met Woody Hayes on campus, on the Oval at OSU. He continued to teach military history for several years after he was fired from coaching, and seeing him walking on campus was like meeting Zeus...only Zeus was friendly, personable, looked you in the eye and smiled when he said hello. Woody Hayes is remembered for a few incidents like this...but if more people were half as decent as Wayne Woodrow Hayes, the world would be a far better place. (Also, domestic violence became a much more serious social issue after this ran...and Woody Hayes was never accused of such. Yes, the skit was hilarious).

What's really funny is Gilda Radner went to Michigan!

I can't believe it, I've never seen this clip before. You knew he was going to erupt, but they saved it for the end! Brilliant!

They would never show this today because it's too funny.

I believe this is true (but do not bet any serious money on it): A reporter asked Mrs Hayes if she had ever considered divorce. And she responded "Divorce no. Murder yes."

I grew up a Buckeyes fan and remain so to this day. One day, I was with a friend walking down High Street in Columbus near the OSU campus. On a corner, we saw a doddering old man in an overcoat and Homburg hat. As we got closer, we saw it was Woody Hayes. He was retired by this time and was alone and looked a little lost. I felt sad for him. I said, "How you doin', coach?" He gave me a puzzled look and replied with an unintelligible mumble. This clip reminded me of that day. I think all true Buckeye fans remember Coach Hayes fondly and forgive him for his disturbing actions late in his career.

As a kid busted a gut on this. Monday at school everyone was talking about it and laughing.

Woody had his faults, so did Belushi. Who would have thought Woody would outlive a man 33 years his junior?

I'm old enough to remember Woody and all the crap he used to pull. RIP old man.
