The Breville Razor trimming tool is a dosing control tool that Breville came up with to make the lives of beginner baristas easier. Problem is, it can do more harm than good. In this weeks review, we look at the Razor Tool, and show you exactly why you shouldn't be using it, and what you should be using for dosing and tamping instead!

The Razor is perfect for prying the basket out of the portafilter when cleaning or swapping to a different size. It's much easier than trying to use your fingers.

I just bought yesterday (4-9-21) my Breville Barista Express. I appreciate your videos. This one is really good.

It really it a science to learning, making a perfect cup. I wasted two cups this morning and the third one was great. I’m still learning of coarse. I need to buy those tools you just showed at the end. Thank you

The razor is a good calibration tool for a palm distributor or tamper

Holy crap!! This is the first time I've seen one of your videos that you showed your face.
Plus, as always a high quality video, always available in 4K and right to the point.
Thank you

Thanks to this video! The Razor was the problem for me. I was trying to prepare a one-cup espresso with the Razor. However, the Razor trimmed the coffee dose in one cup filter basket too much so that the pointer never went in the Espresson Range. Then I stopped using the Razor and just tamped it with pressure after watching this video. Finally, the pointer went in the Espresso Range.

Thank you for the confirmation! I used that razor exactly one time and threw it back in the box. If I’d seen this video beforehand, I wouldn’t have even bothered. All it does is make an absolute mess!

Great video. I ended up getting a tamp weight and it's been incredible. Way more consistentcy. Can't recommend them enough

Interesting. I use a paper clip to break up any clumps, tamp, use the razor tool and then lightly set the tamp over the puck and give it a few spins. It smooths out the “disturbed” puck and all my shots are consistent in taste and time of extraction (between 25 - 30 seconds).

I found a great use for it, believe it or not, lol!
After tamping, I'm sometimes left with coffee grounds sticking to the sides of the basket. Rotating the razor on the basket's wall while holing the portafilter at an angle against the knock box gets rid of them completely, leaving me with cleaner looking basket haha.
However, after using a 53.3mm tamper, I no longer needed it, always cleaner baskets with the 53.3mm tamper.

I can only make reasonable coffee thanks to LL videos, without them i'd be lost. Sage (Breville) Barista Pro nicely dialled in after a day or so, never used the razor and have a palm tamper. The scales i just use my lab ones after watching these videos. All in all converting the black art of expresso making in to a process that pretty much anyone can follow, my 11yr old now pulls shots like a Pro after being educated here.

I used the Razor to set up the depth of my palm tamper and distributor tool

I have that exact scale and it's awesome 😎

I use it only to gauge the minimum depth of my distribution/tamper tool. Otherwise, it’s useless just as you mentioned. In addition to the coarseness/fineness of the grounds, the roasting level can also vary the *volume* of the grounds in comparison to its mass, thus rendering the “razor” ineffectual.

I use the palm tamper. Perfect every time.

Once you dial it in to your grinder and find the right dose the razer comes in handy. It ensures you get a perfect amount every time if you use it intelligently, i didnt see it being used appropriately in this demonstration.

My shots improved dramatically with this little tool. Definitely don't go and order the tool online as there are better versions out there but for something extra in the box i was pleasantly surprised.
