If you are going to plant potatoes later, the variety you choose is very important. Some varieties will give you virtually no production if you plant them after the typical spring period.

This makes sense. My great grandma, who was a farmer here in south central Texas, would always plant her potatoes around Valentine’s Day. It’s much warmer down here and the average high in February in Texas is around 60F. If you plant any later here it gets too hot.

Agree with this. Especially this year in CT soil temps were still in 50s in June. Seeds didnt germinate well. Patience is key in Spring. Dont rush to plant

Definitely location dependant. We grow south American long season mountain cultivars early in the spring usually early April, then our short season cultivars in the summer, usually June. We plant one last planting mid July and we get a last harvest in September. If we plant again in August we have baby potatoes too by the time frost kills them. We choose specific mountain breeds for our spring planting because they do better in cooler weather and shorter days. Purple potatoes tend to produce more in the summer though so we avoid them in the spring.

I live in El Paso, Texas. Here, the climate ranges around 80 degrees between March and November. we have 3 seasons with plenty of sunshine. actually I have to shade some vegetables because the sun will dry them up if you're not cautious.

I start the seed potatoes growing in early March, in a light room, not too warm. Then, at the beginning of April I plant them in good, rich earth. Not where they were the year before, I do a 4 year rotation for them. They're showing leaf in a couple of weeks. I earth the early growth with home-made compost, and add more later if there are any tubers showing. If it gets cold I cover them with a fleece. They are ready to harvest in September, when the leaves have faded. I get really huge crops, normally around 2kg. a plant.

Potatoes go in between March 1-15th. It's May, I have healthy plants with plenty of bloom. I will have plenty of Potatoes this year.

Also remember to adjust sowing times based on where you live. In tx, I sow potatoes in march/April because it's getting nice outside. When it gets insanely hot, I harvest them and sow sweet potatoes so I have them by Oct/November

You should root the individual plants before planting. We have an organic farm in a place with a short window for planting, and we have an insane yield for potatoes every year doing that. You need the roots to be established, because that’s what grows the potatoes. If the plants have to use their energy to grow roots in the beginning, it can cut a month or two off your actual grow time. Especially if it’s cooler during the rooting time.

I am in the UK we have potatoes First Earlies, second Earlies and main crop. They are planted in that order and they take different length of times to grow.

I grow mine year round in ground but also in buckets. I just harvested 3 buckets the other day and 1 bucket was 8 lbs another was 4 lbs! Buckets are really a great way to go

Depends on where you live. In middle GA we plant potatoes middle February. June might be too hot for where we live

Your information like all growers depends where where you are and where I am. So many channels to sift thru.
