Asking permission first is needed. Otherwise, it is rude to place a camera in the face of people who want privacy.

I am so glad that you are kind and lenient towards foreigners about this, but coming from a country with an even bigger reliance on tourist economy from Japan, Greece, I must admit I totally understand Japanese people critical of tourists. Some tourists - even when they know the rules and manners they should follow - simply choose to be rude and excuse themselves as "being careless and adventurous" for the sake of their vacation joy. They view the countries they visit as large theme parks that solely exist for their pleasure and expect us locals to lick their boots because they bring us income. This is an unfair use of power and privilege and a disregard for local culture, nature and people, and it needs to be called out.

Sending love to Japan from Greece. 🇬🇷❤️🇯🇵

it might be a good idea to have interview someone and include the do's and don'ts. so tourist who come to japan can follow the rules. you are a big influence to everyone.

I'm sorry some people have little to no manners. I hope Japanese people don't think outsiders are all like that. Your country is too beautiful for that. 😊

Kyoto is nice to visit but having lived 10+yes in Japan I prefer to go to smaller less known places. Japan is full of interesting history and culture if you know where to look.

We all need to support good behavior in travelers and speak up against bad behavior.

Thanks! don’t be too harsh on Japanese people to teach foreigners proper etiquette, and really the tourist’s should look into some of the customs of the Country there visiting, before they go on vacation there

You're right. Adaptation to a culture should be a responsability for both sides. Even if the tourists put all their effort, maybe they still aren't getting some critical information, but yeah, there are some people who don't want to change, even with information. Sadly the only way to deal with this is prohibition and punishment, without thinking about other kind of politics. Thank you for talking about this! It's so important! 🥰

Not to mention that there are a lot more foreigners actually moving to Japan and becoming citizens lately too!

Just looking at the crazed photo takers tells me enough. It's gross.

I wanna go to Japan someday.
Seems like such a magical place.
& Yes i agree, it's disrespectful to shove a camera in anyones face, especially without permission.
I'd love to get pictures with a Geisha someday, i have seen Memoir's of a Geisha when i was a teenager, ive been intrigued since. (Im 28 now)

I would say every country facing that crazy tourist.
I would suggest to place police officers in the tourist attractions (most of country have them). And a few bodyguard for the Maiko/ Geisha as they are considered as celebrity and need to be protected

Even Japanese don't follow the Japanese rules and having bad manners as they taking pictures of these beautiful women, so it's not only the foreigners who do not follow the Japanese rules about photographing upthere.

It's really not that hard to follow the rules...

That lady who chased down a geisha down the street - she should have known better. No matter which country you’re from, you should know better not to treat a fellow human like some kind of exhibit at a zoo or a museum, smh.

As a LOYAL TOURIST for 10 YEARS who have been to Japan 8 TIMES let me tell you One thing that will STOP ME FROM REVISITING JAPAN.

People like me, love Japan and become loyal tourists because of its CULTURE. So YES YOU HAVE TO KICK OUT BAD TOURISTS, OR GOOD TOURISTS WILL NOT RETURN.

I appreciate her saying they should investigate instead of just blaming. I hope we all can make travel more pleasant.

Haven't they recently banned tourists from Kyoto for this reason?

Japan likes to blame foreigners for a lot things. The way they treat foreign criminals is also different from Japanese criminals. If a Japanese person gets arrested and are shown on the news their face is blurred out and voice is robotized, and very little information is shared about them. But when a foreigner is arrested and shown on the news, their face doesn't get blurred out, the prefecture they live in is shared and the company they work for is put out for everyone to see.

Honestly...
I really admire your good intentions, but most tourists simply behave horribly because they don't care. They simply think they can do whatever they want since it is not their land and they legitimately (especially Americans and Europeans) think they are superior to all the people they visit.
