Russia says its forces are conducting drills, but the large presence of troops and military equipment near its border with Ukraine has leaders in Kyiv and the West concerned that it could lead to a major outbreak of fighting. Experts told Current Time what they think Moscow is up to.

Uhm. Whose villages are getting shelled? "Escalating the conflict" has no meaning unless you keep that in mind. There was a lot of dying that took place at the outset of this conflict, and it was by the inhabitants of those villages. Attempts at autonomy within a federalized structure were answered with bombs instead. They don't want anything to do with Kyev's central government anymore, but instead of granting a divorce, it thinks of continuing to beat its former partner.

The US should quickly increase the supply of arms to Ukraine, they should be given more Javelins along with air defense weaponry like Stingers. Russia can still be discouraged from any further offensives.

This is what happened when stability is broken. Since the break up of the Soviet Unions, Russia's sphere of influence was drastically diminished. Many nations that were part of the Soviet Unions chose to divorce from Russia and join the West, and even became a NATO member. If the West has the good sense to look at the situation in the Russian shoes, Russia wouldn't appreciate the fact that NATO is encroaching on its territories more and more. America bragged about how weak Russia was. Obama openly said it. Then nations that were part of the Soviet Unions allowed lethal missiles to be installed on their land, potentially threaten Russia.

Of course the latest break up of Ukraine from Russia, with abundant assistance and encouragement from the West, America being the most supportive of them all, vocally, militarily and financially, won't please Russia one bit. Then NATO kept bragging about how tough it is, sanctions after sanction on Russia thinking that a hammer is the best tool it has, and the only tool it knows how to use best.

That is what happened when the tentative balance between Russia and the West was broken. Now a weaken America, and a stronger Russia, Russia wants Ukraine back.

I would pull back Ukrainian mobile armored reserves to near Kiev and send in Polish armored Bde's to cover the Belorussian avenues of approach east of the Pripet marshes and west of Chernobyl. The Germans should begin mobilization and the US should send an armored Bde to Romania for an immediate exercise
