Abandoned 1800s Insane Asylum With Painful History

Amongst a beautiful tree-lined property in Italy sits a long forgotten abandoned insane asylum with a horrific history. The historic neoclassical designed hospital opened way back in 1876.
The hospital’s famous semi-circled design gave the exterior brickwork a rotunda with a smooth curved look and feel on each opposing end of the building. From the outside, this hospital would seem so peaceful and tranquil, however, behind those marvelous curved exterior walls, were actually psychiatric isolation cell blocks on the interior. And what was happening inside those same isolations cells, is the same stuff that nightmares are made of.
This abandoned Italian insane asylum was known as a place of horror for its patients that resided there as they were subject to humiliation, depravity, and torture. The patients were both physically and sexually assaulted and robbed of all their respect and dignity. With no outside governance, the patients became lab rats for doctor’s experiments, suffering from all types of neglect and abuse. Many patients died as a direct result from the experiments, as well as from the hardships of asylum life, all leading up to its nickname of “The Painful City.”
Over the years, there were so many reports and documented cases of mistreatment and cruelty that it became obvious that something was wrong with the hospital and officials were finally forced to take action. It had become notorious amongst the community and people became outraged, all leading to its final closure in 1998.
After sitting abandoned for nearly 25 years, the one-time insane asylum is now in a state of decay, a mere shell of its former glory, standing forgotten and rotting away in a tiny rural Italian town. Watch us explore this asylum at abandoned central.

This video is very sad. Those people who were mistreated, didn't deserve it.

don't understand how anyone could be so heartless and treat anyone that way.

This was so beautiful, but so sad. I feel that they made places like this beautiful, to hide the ugly of what they were doing. May the tortured RIP. 💔💔💔

Could you include the names of the facilities when they were in operation?

I always wondered if the families would feel extreme guilt after learning how their relatives they sent there were treated or wondering if they knew all along and just didn’t care

That one room actually still had lights and the heater on and working since it closed and was abandoned in the 1990s?!? I wonder how was the electricity even staying on?!? I’d hate to know what the bill is! 😅

This was common for most mental asylums in the world of that timeframe period. Patients with severe mental illnesses were seen as sub humans basically, so the idea behind these "medical" centers were to keep such patients away from sane individuals, not necessarily treating them.

Also, because local authorities of those times didnt really give a fck about such mental asylums, they were severely underfunded and understaffed. This contributed to inhumane and gross conditions of the facility
