Rofi-Edit - An Easy Way to Open Files for the Keyboard Fumblers Amongst Us!

Rofi is a brilliant little utility that can be adapted for many uses, and if you're a keyboard fumbler like me, you will appreciate the way that it can help eliminate typing mistakes by reducing non-essential keyboard interaction.

I created this script when I came across a video about a script called rofi-beats. I adapted this script to do a different job - isn't Linux wonderful - and Rofi-Edit is the end result.

It's a long way from perfect and please feel free to offer suggestions for improvement.

You can find the script on my Gitlab page here:

And if you want to take a look at rofi-beats whilst you're at it, this can be found here:

I hope you enjoy the video :-)

I am also a fan of Rofi. I have hot keys to two scripts, one for a master menu and the other for locating files. Very useful in a tiling WM setup, and good as a backup in a desktop environment. Thanks for showing its versatility in doing other tasks, as well. My experience is that different terminal emulators treat the -e option differently. I vaguely recall having to use quotes for what follows for some but not for others, at least if there are blanks involved.

G-Box, Yep! You've been watching "The Linux Cast"... Matt make me laugh all the time... :-)
I seen the video and like you I grabbed Rofi-Beats and added a bunch to it too... LOL Love Rofi... :-D

Then I said, Hay! So I made a Rofi-Beats2 and I added a bunch of my favorite local music folders like "Styx: Cornerstone" and so on.

I have not setup a keybinding I just start it in a terminal and I made a Pkill script to stop it...
Like I said I run mine from the terminal and I don't want MPV output so I add these flags:
"--really-quiet --no-audio-display"... :-)

I was just thinking yesterday about something like what you did, so thanks for all the "leg" work... LOL

As for Gnome-Terminal I have issues with it passing commands too. I feel it it not doing the " -e " right. Some terminals seam to have issues passing commands at times. Anymore I just use "xterm -e nano ????" and get on with it... Lol
Seeing how I use mostly Cinnamon and it always has xed I use it in place of nano... :-)

BTW the Dev for Rofi-Beats did a update to the code yesterday and now have added some arguments which make the "notification" work better and display the Now Playing for each item...

Thanks for the video OTB!

One tweak you may want to try with this is to separate the list of streams from the script, so you can edit it if you find other streams. Rofi sure is useful!

maybe an easier way would be to use rofi-json from luiscrjunior. as you could create a conf json with your "bookmarks". rofi-json reads json files with jq and creates the rofi menu. E.g. I've a special format of my sxhkd config, with comment headers. I convert it to a json file and create a rofi menu from it. so I get a shortcut list at super+s

Great video. N even though its a old video and you probably figured out the solution with alacritty. But id use a separate script so alacritty opens in a full screen window. Or its your window manager

I've been missing that functionality, as of late my previous setup on OB has been broken.

And when I figure out why dmenu mode is not enablable when it is in the modi line in configrasi, I will have a solution to why my version of this won't run. Baffled atm. Life goes on. Very cool what you've done though.
