There's a long-standing myth that Linux is only for techies & coders, and has no place being used by us everyday users. Well, here are 10 reasons why the Linux family of operating systems are for everyone (and should be USED by everyone), even more-so that Windows 10/11 or Mac OS!

Another Reason Linux doesn't do the sneaky shit that Windows does like having a key logger built in to windows 10 and forcing updates that make software no longer work.

Comes without bloatware. No kidding - I find it much less disturbing to work with. That combined with a usually much easier maintenance cycle.

My first real computer was an Amiga 500. When it became obsolete, we had no choice but to move into the IBM/Microsoft ecosystem. I was like... where's all the shareware? If Linux had been around back then, moving from the relatively open system the Amiga, would have made much more sense to me. Capital makes money, and products as a side note. Passion makes truly innovative stuff, and like Linux and the World Wide Web itself, products of passion are given to humanity for free, for everyone's benefit and the greater good. Long live Linux!

I've always disagreed with the idea that Linux is only for nerds. My mother is computer-illiterate and proud of it, but she uses Linux Mint 17 without batting an eye.

Linux is for everyone. Enough excuses. It's time to get Ubuntu onto computers sold at Walmart and Best Buy. Windows is obsolete.

I love Linux but most of these reasons are not good reasons to switch because Windows already have most of them :
- Games? Windows have a lot more games than linux
- No need to go to the source code to troobleshoot? Windows has also a strong community that is willing to help you
- A lot of languages? Windows and Mac have a lot of languages as well.

So in your video, it's mostly 3 or 4 reasons to chose linux and 5 or 6 reasons why Linux is not that difficult to get your hands on.

How would you recommend a non-techie user go about getting linux installed? Is this something I could do myself or would I need help? Am I likely to come across issues with hardware compatibility? There's also the issue of removing the current OS ...in my case Windows 10, which seems to add a few obstacles.

good video, but i don't see those as reasons to switch. I mean for the most part those don't show why linux is better option, but it clarifies some of the misconceptions and it's generally saying it is as good as the other operating systems. but that is not a reason to switch

I feel like I'll be joining a cult if I installed Linux.

I've often thought about trying linux but item 6 re: all the available distros is where I stop. How do I know which one to choose? Is there a central location to find out about the various ones? Listings of the types of applications/gui that someone like me might reference? I began using computers in the mid 1980's and am trained on both PCs and mainframes, beginning just as 16 bit machines were becoming available. Linux came along later but seemed techie. IF that's changed I have a PC sitting unused that I'd like to use to try it out. Too "weak" for latest Windows...but still fully functional.

#9 Is not entirely correct, from my experience some applications are not available on the GUI 'software centre' and for continous use, some basic terminal commands are necessary. Not bashing linux, but let's be clearer on this.

Fun fact: Linux Mint in VB on my computer runs faster than my Windows 7, even if he can use only 3 cores and 2 GygaRAM.

You could add more positive reasons. My suggestion would be to start at the strongest advantages. It is free, faster and much safer than Windows. You as a user are much more in control of the look and feel. Installing and updating applications USA much easier. Furthermore you can control these updates rather than have the (Windows) updates control you. There is no (real) need for antivirus software. And that is not because Linux is less popular, because it is not. It is inherently safer because of its architecture.
