Grafting GREAT Pear Varieties onto Bradford Pear Trees!

Did you ever taste the fruit on a tree and say "Eww! I'm gonna cut that thing down and plant something good!" Wait - before you cut! - have you considering grafting a fruit tree to make it into something better?

As we learn from Randall at FloraBama Homestead today, grafting is better than getting rid of a tree!

You can take a good fruit variety and graft it onto a bad-tasting or near-worthless tree, transforming that tree into something wonderful. You can graft fruiting pears onto Bradford pears, for instance. Or put a sweet orange onto a sour orange root stock. By grafting Bradford pear trees with good varieties of pears, you'll get fruit fast and have lots and lots of great pears much faster than if you simple planted new fruit trees.

Excellent… I always used to dismiss grafting … however I have recently learned about why one would do such a thing. Very good strategy & skill to learn about. Glad you brought this to the attention of the community.

So this is how you plant fruit trees and you don't have to wait 7 years for fruit? By grafting twigs of the variety you want to grow on already existing stumps. I get it now. How incredible is this?

Genius!!! I have a few pear trees that never bear much fruit and I have some that are monster producers. I am going to graft the good ones onto the bad ones!! Awesome!!

That's the good stuff, right there. One of my next projects, getting good at grafting so I can lose my fear. Going to start germinating sour orange seeds, pot them up and nurse them to use a root stock. Seems way cheaper than buying all the citrus I want. Same goes for other fruits trees I'm growing from seed. If I don't liker them, I'll fix it. the deer put my apple and pear tree project on hold, so I gotta fix that as well.

Thanks for this info. A sister-in-law gave us a bradford pear. We planted it but I've never liked it; almost cut it down several times. Now, I'd like to move it, it's in the shade and graft a good pear onto it.

Next spring going to put apples sions on top of Bradford pear.Ive grafted plums on top of peaches. And saved my 55 year old apple trees to new apples on top of all my old trees it works new life .
