The Peloponnese is a historical-geographical region (21379 km²) of southern Greece, formed by a peninsula, however artificially separated from the mainland with the construction of the Corinth canal. About two-thirds of its territory is included in the administrative region of the same name,[4] while the remainder is administered by the region of western Greece (prefectures of Achaia and Elis) and for a small part by the region of Attica (part of the prefecture of Piraeus). The main cities are Argo-Mykines, Corinth, Calamata, Patras, Pyrgos, Sparta, Tripoli.
