Audi S4: The perfect daily driver?

The Audi S4 might not quite have the fireworks of flagship RS models, but for a daily driver it's always been easy to recommend. But how does the switch from petrol to diesel affect the latest model? Chris Knapman finds out in this CarGurus review.

I have had my B9 S4 for 3 years but will not be changing to a Diesel. I also don’t like the touch screen or the lack of Matrix LEDs on the standard & Black Edition versions. The new S4 is a backwards step so I will be keeping mine longer than usual and will be looking at a BMW M340i when I eventually decide to change it.

Absolutely love this diesel motor, the low down torque characteristic for me is just right. It’s a pity that highly efficient and clean diesel motors get demonised.

I think in this class I would have chosen the new BMW Alpina D3S when it comes to summer. Not clear yet whether it will be on sale in the UK, but guaranteed in Germany, and at least 388 HP and up to 800 NM and roughly the same price. It has 3 turbochargers, and faster than BMW's own 400 HP diesel monster with 4 turbochargers.
It will probably do 0-100 km h in 4.2 seconds, based on what the 5 Series does with the same engine.

At 1500 rpm/ 700 torque its a machine at all times quick.I love it .And 6 or 7 liter wen you drive 180 kmh and lower and faster its used 7, 0 liter .Unbelievble good feel consumptionn .At 140 kmh Under the 6.2 liter until 5.5 liter .Wow .

Just a reflection on how the first gen RS7 had a dual clutch transmission (and its 4.0TT TFSI siblings). An APR upgrade to the DL501 transmission clutches if you wanted more power output (as Audi said they reverted to the torque convertor because the S tronic couldn't hanlde any more extra power). 8 speed is great but totally agree with you as it can't compare to the snappiness of the Stronic transmission. Also just realizing the true potential of the 3.0 Kompressor mill. Hot Vee turbo 6 is amazing (can mill out the turbos compressor wheel/put a larger turbo)., however M2 Motorsports has built a completely new supercharger unit which should take the V6 Kompressor (supercharged) mill above 600HP, far beyond what the stock supercharger coupled with APR's pulley upgrades can offer!

I was just looking at s4's, looking for a fun car that is more family oriented than my current bmw m2. Diesel? So the s4's ive been seeing driving about are Diesel.... disappointed doesnt cover half of it. I know the 2018 is a 3 litre petrol, but i wanted something newer, or even brand new. Definitely will not be biying this. Guess its a bmw m340i for me then!.

I cannot understand this trend for glueing an i-pad onto the top of the dashboard in modern cars. A cheap and nasty looking arrangement that completely spoils an otherwise fantastic interior. If touchscreens are to be the way of it, fine. But why can't they be properly integrated into the dashboard any more?

Well... Diesel and S badge don't seem to go hand in hand. Nevertheless, I am sure this S4 is great commuter car !

Ruined it by making it a diesel. I've got a B9 S4 and blooming love it. Would have got a new one. But not a diesel. It's £10k more than the other 3.0TDi and barely any quicker. Thoroughly pointless. This and the silly touch-screen controls.

If its only get 35mpg, you might as well have left a petrol motor in it Audi. You can get much better mpg from an X5 3litre diesel and 4x4's always offer worse kpg. I use an X5 as an example as i have experience of driving one.

Petrol Ped on YouTube just paid £400 for an interim service ! Basically an oil change so beware of what Audi dealers will charge you ..
