Secondly, employing the hiker's thumb requires extra muscular effort to push your thumb beyond its natural position. You'll feel the strain in the muscles as you try to force your thumb into that uncomfortable angle.

Go ahead and give it a try. If your thumb bends unnaturally and you feel tension in the muscles, that's a sign that you're pushing it too far.

Thirdly, achieving a significant pick angle can still be accomplished by using the perch thumb technique, which is accessible to everyone. There's no need to resort to the hiker's thumb for that purpose.

Lastly, if you've seen other guitar players using the hiker's thumb and believe it's the secret to getting extreme muted sounds, I must debunk that myth. In fact, if you watch Periphery's latest documentary, you'll discover that they use a variety of techniques and sophisticated equipment, including multiple gates and fractal units, to achieve their desired sound.

None of those talented musicians rely on the hiker's thumb playing position.So, when it comes to holding your guitar pick, it's best to avoid the hiker's thumb technique and instead explore other approaches that provide better control and comfort.
