What Is Vimpat? | Epilepsy

Vimpat or Lacosamide is another one of the newer anti-epileptic medications indicated for controlling partial onset seizures, so seizures that start in one area and spread. It is FDA approved in adults over the age of eighteen. Its main side effects are sedation and some dizziness. But it works well. We've had very good efficacy with it. Comes in an iv formulation and also in oral, both liquid and pills. Its an interesting medication because its a slow sodium channel blocker. So works differently than some of the other sodium channel drugs like trilaptel and dylantin and tegretol; and can be used in combination with those medications to help again stabilize the neuron and create better seizure control. So its another medication that should be discussed with the person who's providing your care, watch for side effets and satutory start out slowing on the dosing ussually at fifty milligrams twice; and day and gradually increase it. Its shown to work best at doses of about two hundred milligrams twice a day. You can go up a little higher than that but there's not much efficay beyond that. So its another good medication to discuss with your doctor.

Vinpat has been a blessing for me, Since I was put on it I haven't had a seizure, I also take Keppra which wasn't helping much but with both of them I've been fine and will be a year without a seizure on Novemeber 15th

I feel Vimpat has been a life saver for me. It is the newest med in the cocktail of medications that I am currently on; my neurologist replaced trileptal with vimpat and it has worked splendidly and for that I'm thankful. So now I take Keppra, Zonergan, Lamictal and Vimpat. Perfect control.

My brother was recently put on vinpat, Keppra and Trileptal and is experiencing severe dizziness. Dr changed Keppra to a time release but I had to carry him to his apartment last night. Is anyone else getting severe dizziness?

I’ve been diagnosed with epilepsy just under 2 years now. I’ve never had a seizure, what happens to me is, I have a intense Déjà vu moment that lasts about 10 seconds, I do get a feeling/warning I’m going to have it(sometimes doesn’t transpire) although they are weird and off putting, I’m alway completely with it and can continue a conversion or whatever I happen to be doing. I just can not find any info on line or people with similar cases to me, I am currently taking 2x 50mg tablets of Vimpat a day (half of what was originally prescribed, by accident) and they have reduced these moment down to once or twice a month (down from 4 or 5 times a week) I’d love if somebody could point me to more info on my current condition, or tell me exactly what I have. Thank you

Vimpat is a blessing... But the longer your on it the more likely you are to have kidney failure and heart failure from the research I've been doing because of the side effects I been having
