The Confederate Navy submarine the Hunley sank the USS Housatonic in Charleston harbor on February 17th, 1864. Two years before this sub was launched. The Peral Submarine, launched in 1888, was the first powered submarine. The first military submarine was Turtle (1775), a hand-powered acorn-shaped device designed by the American David Bushnell to accommodate a single person.

You mean 1866. Not 1966. Jules Verne wrote Twenty thousand leagues under the Sea in 1870. Interesting story.
