Interesting strategies. I completely agree with teaching mental math strategies. However, completely disagree with overcomplicating simple math. The reason being that if simple math is overcomplicated, this slows down the ability to progress to higher level math. I do not see any reason to delay teaching kids the standard algorithms. Memorizing math facts but understanding how to do quick mental math is important for simple addition like 9 +8. Knowing, that 9 is one less than 10 and if 10 + 8 is 18, than 9+8 is 17 is intuitive thinking that all children should be taught.
