This helped me with my kids homework. I know make ten for addition but I couldn’t figure out how it applied for subtraction. Learning these new ways of counting is helping me do math so much faster than just counting up it down.

I am so disgusted at this "new math". My 7 year old is bawling her eyes out right now because of all the ridiculous amount of extra steps that she has to memorize. This is not easier. The school hasn't even taught her basic addition and subtraction tables and they are trying to shove this crap down her throat. Oh and btw, I LOVE math and work in a profession that requires me to know many advanced forms of math. This here is stupid and serves no purpose other than to confuse our children.

Babysitting kids and saw this is what the needed to do, I didn’t know how to do it it baffled me I don’t recall learning this, now I see why cause I was never taught this stupid way. What a waste of time doing these extra steps!! It’s not that hard to count with fingers this would stress kids out. Shame!

This is stupid. But thanks for the help. If I have 15 of something and you take away 9 then I have 6. Why make one problem into 3? My computer science degree did not prepare me for stupid math for my 2nd grader. My 2nd grade teacher taught us to memorize these simple math problems.

I counted to 15 by counting on my fingers and one set of toes. Then I counted to 9 putting a finger or to down each time. Then I saw there were 6 fingers left up. I got the answer. And it took me a count of 15 + 9 = 24. Plus 10 seconds to write this. I got the answer and wrote a how to comment that made more sense in 34 seconds. She made a video that took 1:38 seconds...

I knew 15-9=6 because I didn't waste my time with all those other unnecessary steps! No wonder our kids are falling behind. I don't see the point. The main equation is to subtract 15-9. Not for me to do more useless steps to figure out what is a simple math equation. Bonkers how we teach kids these days!

A child has $15 in his pocket, made from a $10 and a $5.

They don't have to subtract anything to "make a 10".
They already have a 10.

Subtract $9 from $10, and add the remainder to the $5.

What a stupid ass process..here how can we take something that's incredibly simple and just complicate the hell out of it. Nope, this is ONE good thing about home schooling my 2nd grader, he learned how to do math the way all of us over 30 did.. the correct way!!

This makes no F@$King sense. The whole point of common core is so the students show their work and not “think” about the answer. In this video she “thought” twice.
