Remix of Bubble Man theme from Mega Man 2, released on NES

Check out my merch:

This is one of my favourite themes from Mega Man 2, and also the one I have a hard time extend with my own music, it's so well written that it doesn't open for much potential extension. This is also my first remix that I revisit and completely starting over with. I did this a couple of years ago as well, and I'm more happy with how this one turned out rather than my first.

Starting off with that classic arpeggio we all recognize from the original, then adding some different chords to it for a more melancholic atmosphere. When I listen to, and writing this kind of music, I always look for that melancholic feeling side by side with nostalgia, these two parameters is quite powerful together in my opinion. If you're listening to a song you never heard before and feel the presence of melancholy and nostalgia - the musicians/composers have completely succeeded.

My first section at 0:48 is a more cheerful one to get some balance in the song, and by the time section 2 starts at 0:58 I'm straight off to those parameters I wrote about. Section 3 and 4 is based on a heartfelt solo inspired by the original Bubble Man melody and, of course, with loads of reverb backed up by a half tempo beat.

Wrapping up with another set of the original theme at 1:41 and then ending in a long massive sus2 chord.

0:00 - Bubble Man theme
0:48 - Neon X section 1
0:58 - Neon X section 2
1:09 - Neon X section 3
1:30 - Neon X section 4
1:41 - Bubble Man theme reprise

Better than the original. Really feels like you’re underwater. A remaster.

I feel like I'm watching something sink and seeing the bubbles slowly ripple to the top when I hear the intro. Love it😊

This was the track I was looking forward to the most, and I wholly enjoy the approach you took here. The use of suspended chords works really well with the overall feel of this one. Incredible job :)

Wow, Neon X, this is beautiful! When I saw your latest Community post, I knew we were in for something special, and awesome to see you revisiting these beloved themes, but now with expanded sound libraries, renewed creative energy, and a good deal more experience!

Of course, the songs immediately sound different because of the differences in instrumentation and arrangement, but it's also very clear that your mixing has improved notably (and it was very good to begin with), with how the lead, supporting, bass, and percussive elements all have distinct roles and space created for them. The sound balance is tighter, too, and there's an increase in just how polished it sounds overall - it's really something to take pride in! :D

I have to say, this remix definitely had a bit of a bittersweet feel, and I really got that sensation especially at 0:48 and around 1:30 - they're lovely, yet a bit wistful, and there's something pure and heartfelt about it - like that element of 80's/90's music that just fully conveys an emotion without any pretense or irony - that's one of the many things I love about music from those decades. When encountering a remix for the first time, I always try to listen intently, from start to finish, before reading the description, or beginning to write a comment. I feel it's important to do this because if there are things in the music I'm hearing that are unique or have a strong impact, or if the person really took a creative risk, I want to experience that organically, without being prompted first, or inclined to expect something. So the fact that you mentioned a feeling of "nostalgia and melancholy, despite not having heard the original" nailed _exactly_ what I felt here - testament to your wonderful arrangement and instrument choices!

It's so cool how you continue to refine your style and approach to making music, so there are familiar elements in each remix, but it doesn't feel repetitive or samey. That's a tough balance to achieve, but you nail it every time! In particular, I always look forward to hearing a half-time segment where the song takes flight - that's really the best way I can describe how it feels for me - and I really don't know how you manage to do it so well and so consistently, but you're a true guru when it comes to creating a wide range of sensations and feelings for listeners! The use of deep reverb and tandem harmony adds so much richness to the music, and I get the feeling that these parts are special for you, too.

I'm always excited - and pleasantly surprised - to see your community grow with each release, and your growth has been incredible over the past few years. I hope you'll continue to find joy in remixing beloved VGM tunes! Until next time, my friend! 💛

Can we have you team up with Jud6ment to put these in a mega man MCU-1 music package? Would be epic to play games to your soundtracks! (Zelda too!)
