Unhappily, this is what war looks like. These could have been F-22s and it wouldn't have changed this outcome one whit except for the number of zeroes behind the dollar sign. My heart goes out to those who have died and are dying in this senseless war of aggression.

At this point I would not be surprised more than one is damaged already in two different occurances: incident/strike. The pilot was one of their media figures even he was in the NATO video promoting the arrival of F16. I believe it is you perhaps that said it could be a huge moral boost or the opposite if all goes wrong...

Losses during a war are inevitable. This is the first war of F-16 of that magnitude and intensity. This plane has fought some wars since its development, but usually in overwhelming numbers and at technical advantage.

Word is that the video that the Ukrainians published with the f-16s had for a short moment a landmark on it that allowed to identify the location to strike

Much speculation. Pilot error? Mechanical failure? Friendly fire? It happened during the missile attack, so could be any scenario. Russia did discover the location of some F16s due to landmarks visible in a social media post. Russia has not claimed to have shot it down, so we could rule that out.

The Italian Air Force just lost a Eurofighter during Pitch Black a few months ago. Was that because of a lack of maintenance, or lack of training?

Friendly fire 100%, if he had some accident in the air he would have a time for catapult, that was hit which left no time to react. There are 100s of air drones, missiles in the air at the same time, very dangerous air to be a pilot

Rumor was that they took the widow of a UA pilot to see the f16 and the area was geolocated based on the footage. Either way those planes are painted with a gigantic bullseye and there is probably a large bonus to whoever takes one out.

I knew a F 16 would be lost fast & hasn’t there been cases of MIGs crashing while shooting down incoming drones in the past

The most likely scenario is that the F-16 was flying low altitude and hit something like a treetop, a power line, or even a bird. This would account for the pilot not having time to eject. If it were merely a “maintenance” problem the pilot would definitely have been bailing out well before impact. If it were a missile the debris would clearly show signs of that and quite frankly we would be hearing about it because the nations providing the F-16s have a vested interest not only in the function of the airframes they donated but in the knowledge of *how* they were shot down. This is one of those “sh*t happens” moments of war.
