This is video is out of context. He does not explain what the meaning of life is, I don't think Carl would ever give this answer to the question "how to find the meaning of life". The context is, if you listen the whole lecture you will understand it, Carl in this lecture talk about the fantasy of anthropocentrism, the humankind in the centre of the universe, the idea that the Universe was created to us thus we are special and all the wrong beliefs and flawed reasoning that in believing that lead us throughout our history. Sagan in this segment speaks to that, to the problem that our (humankind) "...sense of self-worth comes not from anything that we've done, not from anything worthy, but by accident of birth - is where the crux of the humiliation is...". Sagan goes on this reasoning, saying "those of us who wish for us to be important... should do something important...", instead of just "...being dependent on our self-esteem being on nothing we do...".
