Maria Theresa was one of the most powerful women in history. She reformed and modernized her empire all while having 16 children, 11 of whom were daughters, all named Maria. While the boys were educated to be world leaders the girls were taught to be good consorts and obedient wives though they often choose not to be. 5 died tragically young, two rested power from their husbands and ruled states, three became great patrons of the arts and one, Marie Antionette became Queen of France and lost her head in the revolution.

Just two Royal women....with an "intense friendship"

For everyone curious, they were all named Maria in the honor of Mary, mother of Jesus. The name was supposed to protect them. And also, they were not all referred to as “Maria”, but with their middle names instead (eg. Antonia, Carolina, Elisabeth, Josepha etc.)

Fun fact about Maria Amalia that I have to share:

Despite not getting married to the man she fell in love with, Maria Amalia certainly didn't let history repeat itself and gave her oldest daughter, Carolina, permission to marry the man Carolina loved, Prince Maximilian of Saxony (even though he wasn't an heir to a throne).

That's just awesome.

Wow! Marie Antoinette may be the most famous, but her sisters also lead very colorful lives. I love Maria Amalia's life, she was the rebellious daughter who refused to be her mother's puppet.
