My native language is also tonal, so I can hear Chinese tones clearly. Whenever it doesn’t match what it’s supposed to be in Pinyin, I would get so confused. This makes it so much more clear. Thank you 🙏

Oh my goodness, 4:20 I've been searching for days now for why the Ni in Ni Hao sounds like it's using the second tone and now I know 😭 Thank you I was so confused and now it makes so much sense. Studing Mandarin alone can be so tough haha

Tip for remembering what tone to use with 一

My trick was to think of this character as a "bully", always picking on the other tones because for me the 4th tone sounds a bit more aggressive. So, just like bullies in general, 一 is aggressive until it runs into someone who fights back, a character with its own 4th (aggressive) tone. Then it starts questioning itself (2nd tone, a rising tone).

And a bonus twist, while alone at home, in the dictionary, 一 stays calm and has the 1st tone.

Hope this helps someone like it helped me!

加油!加油!

There are various Mandarin courses on Youtube, but non seems to be as clearly and concisely explained as yours. Could you please make a video guiding us on how to pronounce the tones correctly?

Thank you. This came right on time because we’re learning this rule in class. I’m a total beginner. I appreciate all your effort.

What do you do when you have several third tones?
e.g. 我想讲你...。wo3 xiang3 jiang3 ni3 ...
3333 -> 2323 or 3333 -> 2223?
Thank you for your effort!

I just started learning Chinese and have a few questions regarding tonal languages:

1.I like to sing and when I learn English singing has been the best way to acquire pronunciation. However, since Chinese is a tonal language I imagine that when you sing a Chinese song those 4tones might be lost. Do they actually understand the meaning of the song by just listening to it?

2.For the same reason as 1, 4 tones might be lost when you whisper words in Chinese without using your vocal cord. Can people ever whisper in Chinese and communicate with each other?

Not that I expect an answer here but they just came to my mind while watching this.

It feels so much easy to do a third tone instead of the 2nd tone on the first two rules you mentioned D:

Great video!
Loved the way you drew the lines under the text to follow how the tones should be for each word, made it easy to follow.
Saving this in a playlist and will definetely be rewatching this, to follow you in pronunciation!

Hello
These rules are easy when writing words but it is difficult In lesson for the words
. In real life when you speaking how will you know the tone of the next words.

All your videos are so helpful, thank you ☺️
I have a question, where do you get the clips from videos from? Like is there a website where you type in a word and it shows you a video with the word in it because that would be great
