Shield International Hosts Global Conference in Odessa on Refugee and Statelessness Crisis
In the iconic conference hall of Londonskaya Hotel in the coastal city of Odesa, southern Ukraine, the Shield International Organization for the Protection of Human Rights, led by Dr. Saleh Mohamed Daher, hosted a major international conference under the title:
“The Escalation of Refugees, Migrants, and Stateless Persons Around the World and Solutions to This Crisis.”
The conference gathered a diverse range of participants, including representatives from the Ukrainian government, the Odessa City Council, international delegations, a representative of the United Nations in Ukraine, and envoys from the European Union, the Vatican, the Ukrainian Ministries of Justice and Migration, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation. Additionally, diplomats, international organizations, religious leaders, human rights advocates, writers, journalists, and prominent global figures joined the discussion, alongside local and international media outlets.
Key Issues Addressed:
The current state of refugees and stateless persons worldwide.
Perspectives, proposals, and solutions to tackle this growing crisis.
Protecting human rights and implementing international resolutions related to refugees, migrants, and stateless individuals.
Conference Objectives:
The primary goal of the conference was to address the alarming increase in the number of refugees, migrants, and stateless persons, which has reached an unprecedented 80 million globally. This figure poses a critical challenge requiring immediate and effective solutions to alleviate the suffering of those affected.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Saleh Daher emphasized the urgent need to remind world leaders and governments of their moral and humanitarian obligations to maintain international peace and security and uphold the rights and freedoms of individuals.
Dr. Daher stated:
"The world faces an unprecedented challenge, with the number of refugees reaching the highest recorded level. Conflicts in regions like Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Libya, South Sudan, and Central Africa have resulted in approximately 80 million displaced individuals, including internally displaced persons and asylum seekers worldwide."
Call to Action:
The conference called on world leaders to convene a dedicated international summit to address the plight of refugees and asylum seekers. Special attention was given to the fact that over two-thirds of refugees globally originate from countries like Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan, Myanmar, Somalia, and Palestine.
Key Appeals:
United Nations: Shield International urged the Security Council to implement UN General Assembly Resolution 194 (1948), which guarantees the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes. The right of return is a fundamental element of international law, ensuring that refugees can choose to return to their original homes without external interference.
Arab League: The organization called upon the Arab League to take decisive action to protect refugees' rights. Many refugees from Syria, Iraq, and Somalia face challenges obtaining visas to enter Arab countries, forcing many to risk dangerous sea crossings in search of safety. Tragically, over 8,000 lives have been lost in the Mediterranean Sea.
Stateless Persons: The issue of stateless individuals, exceeding 1.5 million globally, was also highlighted. Being denied citizenship is a severe violation of human rights and international law, leaving millions unable to access basic rights and services.
Acknowledgments:
Shield International expressed gratitude to Ukraine for hosting large numbers of refugees and stateless persons, despite the country’s own challenging circumstances. The conference also recognized countries such as Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Germany, Greece, and Egypt for their significant contributions to supporting refugees and asylum seekers.
The conference concluded with calls for global solidarity and collaboration to address the growing crises of refugees, migrants, and stateless individuals, emphasizing the importance of upholding human dignity and rights in a rapidly changing world.
