California rank 5th largest economy in the world. It can be its own country.

Actually California is #1 in agriculture producing, milk producing, total manufacturing, tech industry, movie and entertainment industry, 60% of all imports shipped to the US come through California ports, Los Angeles and Long Beach ports are #1 and #2 most productive, consumer purchases because of the most population with 39M people, the most total businesses, the most new businesses created each year, the most diverse business owners, receives the most investment dollars $87B in 2023. California is the 5th largest economy in the world by GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

Only because California has far more people than any other state. They may create the most wealth based on US dollars but the dollar does not go very far there so is that a fair way to measure how rich a state is when the spending power per dollar from state to state is not equal.

It would be much more useful in a comparison to take the GDP and divide by the number of the people in the state states with lots of people have a big GDP well

Gee the places with huge populations have the biggest GDP, imagine that. GDP per capita is a different story, Texas and Florida fall off the list entirely, New York and California remain while Massachusetts and Connecticut get onto the list.
