In this video I discuss whether you should expect a promotion after passing FE or PE exam.

WHO AM I:
I’m Wasim, a licensed Professional Engineer in Texas (PE), Florida (PE) and Ontario (P. Eng) with consulting experience in design, commissioning and plant engineering for clients in Energy, Mining and Infrastructure. In 2014, I undertook a two year project assignment for a mining client in Florida and also decided to pursue PE Licensure in the United States. The road to licensure was challenging primarily because of lack of study resources for the FE and PE exams. I passed both exams in first attempts (FE in October 2014 and PE in April 2015). The lessons learned during the exam preparation process encourage him to develop FE Electrical and PE Power exam preparation resources to help aspiring examinees better prepare for these exams.

Should you expect a promotion after passing FE or PE exam?

After you get your EIT Certificate, if you are a lower level Engineer then I think it's fair to ask for a promotion, but not demand one. After attaining a PE License and accomplishing all of the other requirements for the next Engineering title you should ask for a promotion and raise, but not demand unless you have another job offer in hand. I asked if I could get a raise or bonus after attaining my EIT, and that didn't go anywhere. I am not sure many companies give you anything other than a pat on the back for attaining your EIT Cert.

Don't expect an immediate promotion unless you ask for it. Companies are rarely in a rush to pay you more money if they can get away with paying you less money for the same work even if you are now more qualified. I strongly asked for what I knew I deserved in a promotion and a raise, but only because I knew my boss already agreed I deserved both. I also justified the salary I asked for. If you don't ask, you will likely wait a lot longer for your raise and promotion. As they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
