What is the difference between if, else if and else in C?

I dont understand why 'if' and 'else if' would make a difference in your code, since both just check if something is true (ands runs it) or false (and doesnt run it)... My code was working weird until I changed all my if blocks (except the first if) to else if blocks, then it worked correctly. But I don't understand why. Is there a logical explanation or is it just how C is built
