All bodies are NOT created equal and I took a DNA test to prove it.

I’m so sick of the toxicity and drama in the fitness industry. I hate that factions of people from certain camps of fitness will tear you apart and tell you you’re doing something wrong just because it’s not the way they would do things. #ad

WAKE UP.

We are all genetically made up of different DNA. So HOW can the same workout and diet work the same for different people?

When I saw that @circleDNA had tests to show fitness data about my body, I jumped on it. After doing my saliva swab, I waited a few weeks to get my DNA extracted and analyzed. The results confirmed a lot of things for me.

My optimal training type:

Low power - I’m not great at sprinting.
High endurance - That’s why I can keep pulsing and pulsing and pulsing…while talking and smiling!
Medium strength - Yes, so far this is true given the weights I’m lifting.

In terms of muscle development, it literally says:

“…your muscles are designed for repetitive work like high repetition weight training or longer duration cardio sessions…you will most likely achieve your best results when training with many reps, with slightly lighter weights.”

This makes so much sense!!!

Month 1 of my 90 day journey to muscle featured higher reps and not-so-heavy weights and I gained 6.3 lbs of lean tissue. In month 2 I switched to lower reps and heavier weights and only gained 2.7 lbs of lean tissue. There are other factors involved too but I think a big part of the difference was my training style.

Month 3 now features not-so-heavy weights and higher reps again. I’m feeling extra confident in my personal workout plan because now I KNOW I’m training optimally for my DNA.

Genetics student here— it’s actually so much more complicated than this. DNA tests don’t account for environmental factors which play a significant role in gene expression. Certain environmental/stressful factors can trigger certain genes to essentially “turn on” or “turn off.” The tests can tell you genes you have and if you may potentially be more likely to have an intolerance, disease, etc, but it cannot confirm nor deny you will have it. A really good example of this is Angelina Jolie. She took a test and found that she was a carrier of a gene linked to breast cancer so she took preventative measures— there was no guarantee she would get the disease, but the gene is highly linked to cancer due to the probability of cell division going wrong and her containing a cell with two mutant copies. Not guaranteed, but highly possible. Trial and error/listening to how your body feels is going to be the best way to go.

Just a quick note: "higher predisposition" does NOT mean that you have something. That test did not tell you that you have celiac's disease (aka coeliac's). It told you that you have genetics that make you have a higher risk for it or of being a carrier of it. That is all it told you (and all a genetic test can tell you).

As someone with diagnosed celiac's disease, I can say with 100% certainty that a DNA test is not part of the diagnosis process. You need a doctor and multiple tests (that go beyond an elimination diet) to tell you if you have it. It's a real disease with serious consequences for those of us who have it. Its not just some buzz word.

Hello! I’m a fourteen year old girl and growing up in middle school (soon high school! Scary 😅) your videos make me feel really good and empowered. I was diagnosed with severe depression, and I struggle with appearance. Everyone does though, so it’s so good to see good humans lifting one another up. This was so cool. Thank you so much for it all and have a lovely day!! :)

This wasn't a "I took a test to prove it", it was more like a "I was paid to advertise this test."

The hardest part is figuring out what is gonna work for you and what is not, the only way to do this is try all the popular diets and workouts and that's what makes this journey extremely hard, if it doesn't work, we feel like giving up on our goals, I've personally seen this, i always do a workout based off the comments, people are always like "Thank you I lost 10 cm in a month" whereas i barely lose 1 cm, and that used make me demotivated, but now that I've realised everyone is different, im just doing it at my own pace

The message of this short was great, but I think you should make it much clearer that this is an ad. You should be disclosing any kind of sponsorship or advertisement.

Certainly you’re right to an extent. However, there’s also epigenetics. So, even though endurance or power might show up as being what you’re body is built for that may not be true. It may just be due to how you’ve been training

1st! Ilysm! Tysm for addressing this topic, bc some ppl just don’t understand how genetics play a big factor in bodies

I started with yoga *for a couple of months*, now been doing pilates for about a month an a half i can do 45 min pilates workout without taking any brakes or getting sore & exhausted! My period, mental & physical health has never been better! I've always struggled with those three things.. When i stop working out for several days i feel like my body gets really overwhelmed, idk how to describe this but things get really bad!! I guess my body builds up so much stress and negative energy in it, and working out was the solution after all!✨

Ironic that you made this short when you have multiple previous shorts including one right below this one, where you basically tell people "want to do this? Then do this!"

So well said and Thank You for using your influence to reiterate this very pertinent fact!!
And on a slightly unrelated note: everyone also needs to remember that EVERYONE DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME GOALS

Excuse my French, but this is mostly bs. There's scientific literature for this and most fitness related advice does not require huge asterisks and is in fact generally valid. Can you optimize your training and nutrition on a DNA Test basis? Probably, but that might be the last 10% to perfection, if that.
This is an ad which unfortunately makes people chase a new carrot, makes them believe all of this is much more complicated than it actually is while also providing them with an excuse as to why their efforts thus far didn't result in much even though there are probably much more basic mistakes at hand for the vast majority of people.

I love how she's a fitness guide basically but is still on a journey, no one really has it all figured out and we still have things to learn about ourselves. All these diet and workout plans get to my head and I get discouraged

It might be worthwhile watching GATTACA. It's a pretty decent movie and attempts to show what goes wrong when people are discriminated against based on their DNA.
Especially if your information gets to insurance companies you could be denied insurance

Thank you for sharing this!!! I’ve been telling people these things for a few years now, since starting my own journey into genetics. I found out that I have some enzymes and other proteins that are slightly different than normal/average due to genetic mutations in my DNA. The markers that code for these enzymes and other proteins have mutated in a way that makes it difficult for me to process 5 key nutrients. These nutrients are paramount to heathy bones, eyes, thyroid function, hormone production, and the nervous system and can lead to a variety of unfortunate illnesses due to malnutrition. Fibromyalgia and glaucoma are just two of the handful of illnesses that run in my family because of these genetic mutations. Thankfully, preventing these illnesses is easier by taking these 5 nutrients in supplement form to allow my body a chance to absorb and utilize more of each nutrient. The damage cannot be reversed but the degradation of the body can be slowed greatly by adding supplements to a healthy diet. Knowing that I have this predisposition means I can better cater the nutrition I give my son so that he can have a better outcome health wise. All of our bodies are different but we are all a representation of the genetics that came before us. Mutations can happen for many reasons, including the bioavailability of certain nutrients in the diets of our ancestors. When vitamin D is highly abundant in the diet of a group of people they can survive on lower absorption rates. But when it’s less abundant they only survive if they have higher absorption rates. We see this in skin pigmentation and the way the color of our skin developed based on how close to the equator or far away we were. Darker skin needs longer in the sun than lighter skin to produce enough vitamin D naturally. The pigments in our eyes are also similar. Studies have shown that brown eyes have better protection from the sun’s rays and are less likely to get melanoma of the eye than people with blue or green eyes.
