The Ancient Romans needed large amounts of water to supply the bath houses and fountains in their cities. Because resources nearby were lacking, Roman engineers designed and built an expansive system of aqueduct tunnels and arcades to bring water into the cities from the surrounding countryside. Changes in the landscape challenged the engineers to come up with ways around natural obstacles like ravines. The Romans found the answers to these challenges in some fundamental principles of fluid mechanics.
