What is an invasive species? #shorts

Invasive alien species are plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms that have been intentionally or unintentionally moved to a new environment and where they spread rapidly and cause damage to biodiversity, the economy and potentially human health. They are a tricky subject as they quickly become a part of the ecosystem but can continue to damage other species for centuries.

Invasive species aren't necessarily non-native to a general area. There's the example of the green willow (translated the German name literally) that grows in the Alps natively, but it often spreads to new areas in the Alps where it can destroy the specific ecosystem there. But I think that's a result of human interference that allows the green willow to spread to these new locations.

Not all invasives are non-native. Cedar trees are native to Kansas and Nebraska, but are considered highly invasive because fire suppression has removed the barriers that once kept them in check.

Lack of predators and spreading without control ... aren't we humans a prime example of this? :)

I've heard the feral cats in Australia are so comfy in local environment they got way bigger than the average house cat

In Japan, some native species are considered as invasive if they threaten other species. For example, Japanese otters in the mainland are considered as invasive in the Northern and Southern islands of Japan.

Cats have travelled with humans everywhere. So they are only as invasive as humans.

All species are "invasive" given a long enough timeline.

Great video, however i point out that a non-native species isnt always an invasive species, in fact some are good for the ecosystem!

All native species were once invasive newcomers. Ecosystems are always changing they are not static, some species go extinct, climate changes, newcomers arive all the time. Specially now that we're moving away from Holocene into Neo-Pliocene, a lot of things will change fast.

America is pretty bad about this for some reason.

My concern with the nomenclature is that it specifies "brought by humans"
Many many MANY Ant species were "brought by humans" unintentionally. Some are invasive and others are not.

Also the term "naturally migrated"
Did new world monkeys and other depris raft species from Africa "migrate" to South America because they hoped on a "ship" made by random chance or were they invasive? They took over those roles in the ecosystem and the ecosystem changed due to them. Is that invasive enough?
Current nomenclature says "no" because that "ship" wasn't man made.
But put a sneaky rat and a sneaker ant queen on a cargo ship in the 1600's and suddenly the islands are being invaded!!!
