What is the invasive species threatening Western Ghats wildlife?

preview_player
Показать описание
An invasive species has now spread throughout the Western Ghats, destroying habitats of elephants, deer, gaur and tigers by pushing out native flora.

The invasive species, known as 'Senna spectabilis', prevent other plants from growing under it. The shed leaves decompose and change the chemical composition of the soil, rendering it unsuitable for the growth of other plant species.

This drastically affects primary productivity at the ground level. The forest floor is almost bare under the invasive species. Grasses and herbs get completely wiped out and herbivores are deprived of their forage.

As far as I understand, invasive species do not grow so easily. These species are somehow introduced by the invasive practices of human beings. One more example is the linking of rivers may also cause invasive species to threaten other fishes in the water.

As someone live in the adjacent boundary of three great reserve forest, Wayanad Mudumalai and Badipur within a radius of 10kms, we can confirm there is another species of plant that has already took over the major undergrowth and preventing grass and other shurb growth....
But this one is only prominent on the muthanga region of Wayanad and litte near Gundelpet...
The other one is spread all around Mudumalai Wayanad Bandipur and even in Tolpetti forest...

It is called as sema thangedu, in our childhood we used to confuse its flowers with thangedu or rela flowers, thangedu flowers are used in bathukamma festivals while rela flowers are made into curry, but these flowers don't serve any purpose ( atleast to my knowledge)

Invasive species can be introduced by humans or migrating fauna. These invasive are no harm to humans or other animals directly. But they do affect the environment we live in. They have the potential of making a furtile land into a barren. Concerned officials must take the issue seriously, at least ecologists study the probable danger and let everyone know about it.
