I feel like he was trying to find a place where he was happy. Traveling so many different areas that would seem like dream locations for someone else, but it wasn't right for him.

A lot of people are going with "home is where the heart is" but I think that does not take account of "rien a faire". In each place he visited he had no role to play, his life had no meaning, there was "nothing to do". In the last place he may, or may not have fallen in love, as suggested by some, but he has discovered a role, he has something to do. Alone, he was bored, with others, he came alive. His role was to relate to others, whether the young woman and her son(?), or with others he was yet to meet.

Some have chosen "home is where the heart is", but I'm going for "no man is an island".

And then he realizes.

HOLY F*CK I FINALLY FOUND THIS SHORT FILM AGAIN! I have searched for this short film for long and I do mean that! I have searched since back in 2013 anytime the memory popped back into mind. I loved this short film for it's story, it's message and it's overall feel but I lost it's title and had forgot to favorite it or really do anything to make a note of it til today! So thank you dear up-loader you have helped finish my 2 year search. Thank you.

I saw it as a writer who keeps trying to find something hes passionate about, but his mind keeps abandoning ideas he really doesn't feel connected to. When he finally finds something to keep him interested in the topic of urban life, he's happy to find his mind is content with the idea.

ok, i know this is old, but this video has just been recommended to me by youtube algo. reading everyone's comment, i think i have a different interpretation than most people here. the way i interpret it, is that he was a depressed man. he wrote "nothing to do" in each page of his notebook. he was trying to fulfill his life by going from one extraordinary place to another, thinking it would be fulfilling and he would feel happy in those places. but what he really needed was just human contact, human companionship, people to share his happiness with. and when he encountered that, it changed everything for him.

This is probably my favorite thing so far to come from Gobelins. The story is touching and realistic even though we're in a whimsical world, the voice acting is really good, and the animation is top notch (of course). I saw that shot of the coffee cup! Excellent rendering. :)
