Here's the beauty of His love not being based in sentiment or feeling: sentiments change and feelings change. You don't always feel like you love. But praise God that the love of Christ for His beloved was not based on how He felt because if it was, there was nothing in us, around us or about us that would have made Him feel like we were worth dying for. That's why it's grace.

Elohim is the plural form of Majesty as in In the beginning God (plural) created the heavens and the earth (singular) but the verse he is referring to 1john 4:8 which does not use Elohim
