Bleeding gums can run in families, though through other underlying causes.

I have hEDS, as does my mom and all of my siblings. Our gums have always bled and we had good oral care when we were younger. But being gaslit by dentists that didn’t know EDS effects gum tissue made us turn away from flossing because no matter what we did our gums would always bleed and we were told we were lying.

I’m 25 and my teeth are breaking and falling out.
I’ve had more than 30 cavities due to enamel hypoplasia. Parts of my teeth have been transparent since I was 6 because of this and it’s only getting worse.
I had a root canal at 18, then braces for 2 years, and by the time I got my retainer it wouldn’t fit even after boiling. But I was gaslit by my dentist for being lazy and not using it. “There’s no way your teeth moved enough for it to not fit”.
My orthodontist shaved down my teeth unevenly to allow for space as well.

Then I had another root canal, and another tooth broke in half. I’ve had several other cavities filled in the last 3 years. One tooth was pulled that almost needed a root canal but was so painful my (then new) dentist cared enough to remove it rather than risk me not numbing and feeling her filling it.

Which is another common issue with EDS, needing more numbing.

My dentist told me earlier this year that my wisdom teeth likely won’t come in, and if they do it won’t be for a couple years. And only the tops would come in. The bottom are too deep, they likely wouldn’t other me. I started seeing all 4 of them 3 months ago.

Rn I think I have a hole in one of my teeth and a new cavity on the other side. I use a tooth pick and floss after every meal just to remove food from that one tooth.

No one ever told us EDS effected teeth or gums. The deep fissures, high cusps, high palette, enamel hypoplasia, sensitive gums, etc.

EDS types can have overlapping symptoms, so even without periodontal EDS symptoms can be present to varying degrees.

Please listen to patients and ask for more history. Look at alternative reasons as to why someone isn’t caring for their teeth or experiencing certain symptoms.

I don’t drink coffee, I don’t drink alcohol, I don’t smoke, don’t use chewing tobacco, never have. I don’t drink any more soda than the average person, possibly less, especially in recent years.
Yet my teeth are falling out and my gums bleed.

It’ll eventually get worse than bleeding gums y’all. I’ve forced myself to enjoy flossing 😂

My gums don’t bleed anymore, but I was always accountable for the fact I didn’t floss regularly lol

I know how you feel. It is the bacteria, plaque, biofilm under the gums that causes the gums to bleed. Flossing breaks up the bacteria under the gums so the gums are not laying on top of the bacteria all the time which causes bleeding and infection. The patient needs to have an open mind. Joyce

Ok, so I've never said it runs in my family for why I don't floss often but I do know that part of the reason why my gums bleed is my teeth are very tightly spaced which does run in my family's heritage and my parents always said I never "needed" braces and that my spacing issues would correct themselves but also I had very poor dental hygiene as a child rarely even brushing except right before a dental appointment. These days I'm much better with my dental hygiene. I'm now brushing at the very least once a day but usually twice and always using mouthwash 2x/day and if I feel like there's food stuck in my teeth I grab a flosser instead of a toothpick!

Being a mouth breather can also cause bleeding gums.

My dentist told me my gums would always bleed because my teeth are extremely crowded. I floss almost every day and they still hurt and bleed. I hate it but I do it. The soft-picks and interdental pick don’t fit. Even the ones made for tight teeth. Most floss doesn’t fit either and I have to use the tight teeth waxy kind. They still shred too even though they are “anti-shred.” So please… 🤦‍♀️
