As a medical student I do like that Goodnotes 5 doesn't have that endless paper scrolling. Personally I like to have a limited page so that I can cram in as much data as possible in one page which makes me use limited words and not span out my notes and later find it difficult to read. So yeah it's a plus point for me

Nice comparison and review. Maybe a additional feature not to over look for onenote is the fact that you can "print to onenote" from every MSoffice app directly by selecting the option "send to onenote" as a printer. the file will show as a print out in your notes and you can write/mark up etc. The search function searches in the prints as well, so you can have your notes and the PPT nicely together.

I’ve come to love an appreciate One Note, which I started using at work. As you mentioned, you can access your notebooks anywhere. I enjoy the color-coded sections or tabs, they have great templates and I love that there is a section for daily notes as well as section tabs. You can change the orientation of the notebook contents to suit you. It’s great being able to take meeting notes and tag items and people! It’s also super easy for collaborating on projects and holds massive amounts of well-organized info. Another great feature is the ability to creat quick notes, like big sticky notes, right from your taskbar without having to open a notebook. I hope MS continues to improve it and support it. Oh yeah, and free!

I originally used notability, specifically for their recording and playback feature. However, I found that when I tried to both record a lecture and write notes at the same time, my the app had a tendency to freeze up and crash. This was very stressful as I was missing taking notes on part of the lecture while waiting for my app to start working again. It is a nice idea in theory, but the implementation wasn't quite there the last time I tried it (September 2021). I ended up switching over to GoodNotes and I really enjoy how it mimics a real notebook.

OneNote is really wonderful. As someone who own multiple OS devices and have to put a lot of pdf in one chapter, that continuous and the fact that I can zoom out how much I want, feels like I'm having a very big canvas but sorted in a file.

I use and LOVE GoodNotes 5. One of the most underrated features is the tabs feature. I take multiple classes in one day and I like keeping the tabs open and comparing notes. Also, I love that the fee is a one time fee. I love the notebooks. I tried many note taking apps, and GoodNotes ended up being my very favorite for school, business, and personal journaling.

One cool thing about OneNote I learned this week: If you use the recording function on your laptop (wish it worked on iPad), you can type notes during — and after, you can click on the individual sentences you typed during the recording and listen back to that part of the audio?! It would be super cool for lecture notes.

Great review. I started using One Note about 7 years ago when I bought a Windows 8 Tablet. The cross platform abilities you mentioned were great to let me go between desktop, iPhone, and tablet. My wife and I started using it to keep our recipe book because it worked on her iPhone and iPad. However, without a stylus it was limited in usability. Two years ago we got iPad Pros with Apple Pencils and started using GoodNotes 5. I agree with your take on it. I import PDFs for markup and it’s great at that.

I’ve used OneNote & Goodnotes in the past, and while I love the apps - I like having my handwriting converted to text easily (my handwriting is ugly) and I think Apple Notes has the most seamless option for that. After figuring out all the neat tricks with apple notes (like creating folders) it’s become my preferred note taking app. It’s very minimalist for me since I just use it for work. Also, it works much better across my devices since I own apple products.

I section my notes on Goodnotes 5 by using the flag or by creating an outline. The better one is the outline because once you open the outline you can click on any portion and be taken right to that information. Also, you can search words (typed and written) and it will open every page on which that word appears.

The ring with one note is it’s really amazing in schools, there are sections that the whole class can see but only the teacher can use, there’s sections only you and the teacher can see and even parts the whole class can use, as well as a hidden section for the teacher. I would recommend it for schools
