François-Marie Arouet (21 November 1694 – 30 May 1778), known by his nom de plume Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher famous for his wit, his attacks on the established Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole and his advocacy of freedom of religion, freedom of speech and separation of church and state.

Voltaire was a versatile and prolific writer, producing works in almost every literary form, including plays, poems, novels, essays and historical and scientific works.

He wrote more than 20, 000 letters and more than 2, 000 books and pamphlets.

He was an outspoken advocate of civil liberties, despite the risk this placed him in under the strict censorship laws of the time.

As a satirical polemicist, he frequently made use of his works to criticize intolerance, religious dogma and the French institutions of his day.

I live in FERNEY (France) the city of VOLTAIRE.
It is a pity that this biography comes before the very thoroughly documented 2015 historical study, by French historian scholar Marion SIGAUT, titled "VOLTAIRE, une imposture au service des puissants".
She masterfully demonstrates there that VOLTAIRE was the exact opposite of an example of integrity. He was a genuine complete and permanent liar, a disgraceful miser, and a thief,  as well as the most rightfully hated person of his time by all those who really came to know him well.
All his so-called crusades against bigotry and injustice are monuments of systematic inventions, inversion of facts, and amazingly clever tissues of lies (the CALAS case, the Chevalier de la BARRE case, etc).
He is one of the best exemples of an absolute fake "great man".  Apart from his theater works which were all and always utterly unsuccessful (for a bunch of very good reasons), he had a real gift for language and nicely written litterature though, the ONLY positive point about him.
