It’s funny that jazz players were hassling you about rules when at its origins, jazz came from a place where the musicians were the ones breaking the rules both musically and socially.

I think that the definition of Jazz is at the heart of this. For me (being a professional Jazz musician for 29 years), it is more about the feel than the notes. Traditional Jazz has 4 primary feels: swing, latin, ballad, and jazz waltz. While I enjoyed your playing a lot, it definitely did not swing, and I would not call it traditional Jazz.

Modern Jazz seems to be more of a blanket term for (mostly) instrumental music with typically more complex harmonies and solos than pop/rock. What you played definitely fits more into this category.

However, I don't think it's up to me, or anyone else, to tell the world the definition of Jazz, it depends on your own opinions.

I love Jazz (and Metal) music, but I despise the Jazz culture that has been developed through the institutionalization of Jazz education.

Thank you for an amazing song, I look forward to hearing more Jazz 2.0!

I come from a family of jazz musicians, and it blows my mind how complex and seemingly unstructured it can be sometimes, yet it all comes together and make sense at the same time.🤔

I’m very sorry to hear that your experience at the conservatory was so difficult.
I think the idea that education in music is taught through the framework of jazz is unfortunate for people without a jazz background.
But there are reason for why things are done the way they are. Jazz institutions teach the methods and techniques of the jazz greats, what you do with the knowledge is up to you.
What you made is beautiful music even though it breaks a lot jazz “rules” and that’s why it doesn’t sound like jazz.
I just think it would be a shame if someone walked away from this video alienated by the “rules” of jazz. “Rules” is just a word for the methods and sounds of previous jazz musicians and jazz is such a beautiful genre of music with so much freedom within it. I really hope the conservatory didn’t ruin it for you

It interesting how gate-keepy certain musical communities can be, metal communities are often quite renowned for their "that's not metal" comments. I love how with this one track you've broken down all those barriers and made a really enjoyable piece of music.

The whole style made popular by Tim Henson has been given many labels, I commonly referred to it as a Jazz, rock fusion, cause it noticeably takes it's style from both worlds...

Not gonna lie, I think it’s one of the better things you’ve done. That sounded like no one else but you. I love jazz, and that definitely qualifies. Very, very nice. 👍🏼👍🏼

This why I love your style of playing. You can hear the jazz influence along w/ your classical upbringing combined into modern metal melodies. Easily feel your up there w/ people like Satriani (in some cases even surpassed) when it comes to combining styles and writing what you feel as opposed to following all the rules other people have laid down as law.

You have found your voice. It's not jazz, it's not metal..It's Bernth. Well done.

Like someone said below, jazz is much more about the swing feel than the notes.. before improvisation took over it was music made to party, to dance.. it actually is a dance! That swing feel a little bit behind the beat is what characterizes the jazz genre the most. Of course there is the bee bop phrasing and its chromatic nature as an strong element as well... but then later ppl took that vocabulary and played with a more rock feel, more straight kind of groove... ppl called that jazz fusion then.. anyway, I think that is true for most music genres, the rhythm is the predominant characteristic and usually is the very thing that gives music genres their names.

Jazz Fusion which started in the late 60's did of course break all the rules of of Traditional Jazz by blending jazz with Rock and Funk and basically every music genre you could think of and this song could easily be thought of as Jazz Fusion.

This is the first time I ever heard you play Bernth with this and the comedic "I still shred". I like it. I've seen it my whole life, from the 60's 'till today, people trying to fit each other into a categorical box of made up definitions that are always changing because no two ever agree on anything. So of course no one really fits in anywhere when you look elsewhere to tell you who you are. You are that You are. Each and every player however is absolutely unique and that uni-quality is Infinite, "Beyond category". So you are your own your own music. You know it when you hear it, when you feel it. Nobody can give that to you let alone take it, because it's uniquely "you". Jam On !

Congrats. Sounds good. But, for me, jazz is more rooted in improvisation, harmonic and melodic content, and nuances (slides, dynamics, rhythmic variation). This is a nice piece, but it is something you studyed and practice lots of times. Memorized. More like a classical piece for me. Anyway, I am a pro guitar player in Rio and also produce lots of practice guitar courses and have students, and I am happy to have found your channel. Great videos and great work. Bravo!

I’m going through this at Berklee Online right now. I actually like a lot of Jazz, but the pedantic way it’s presented with these endless scales, chords, and arpeggios for memorization and regurgitation kills all the novelty. As usual, I’ll have to find my own way. Gorgeous playing and composition!!

I’m not a big fan of jazz but I do love it when it’s mixed in with other styles. Jazz 2.0 is just the right amount of jazz

I think what often get's lost amongst all the harmonic theory of jazz is RHYTHM. We can have many interpretations of what "jazz" is but I believe the fundamental aspect in it's origins was a SWING rhythm. The unquantifiable triplet feel that gives a sense of rhythmic movement.

I've been playing on and off since I was 14, I'm 60 now, and always regreted never being able to go to music school. I had wanted to learn how to play since I was a small kid and finally my father had gotten me a guitar for Christmas with The Mel Bay Guitar Method books 1-3. He told that if I got through those 3 books he would then pay for real lessons. Unfortunately he passed away a couple of months after. With my mom trying to support my sister and I there was just no money for lessons. We lived in a rural area so I didn't even have any one to jam with and at least learn something that way. Unfortunately there was no such thing as the internet in those days either. I was literally jumping for joy when I discovered guitar magazines with songs I loved in tablature. I did manage to build a fairly decent repertoire of some of my favourite songs but even so my lack of knowledge of the theory behind it was holding me back as a musician. I had always wanted to be able to just jump in and jam with the boys and be able to know what I was doing and stay in since musically. I found that a great many YouTube sites weren't very helpful because for most of them it does help to have at least a basic understanding of the basic fundamentals. That and there is so much often contradictory information was more lost than ever. Now that I'm retired I'm finally able to actually take lessons. No music school mind you but at least face to face lessons with an actual teacher at my local Long and MacQuade music store. It isn't The Royal Conservatory of Music mind you but know I at least know what the he'll I'm doing.
