Dame Joan Collins believes it is “tremendously rude” to ask a woman her age - or even discuss age. In an interview with Saga magazine (out on Tuesday) she says: “My mother’s generation never did it… But you know, people have been calling me an older woman since I was 38!” So is it rude to ask someone how old they are?

I agree with the etiquette expert. Age is a private thing. It is none of anyone's business, so no one (other than your doctor, your new employer, or the government ... for tax purposes) should be asking your age.
