If you haven’t yet bought an oscillating multi-tool it’s arguably the most versatile power tool ever produced. It can be corded or cordless and has won over woodworkers, remodeling contractors, and do-it-yourselfers.

What is an oscillating tool you might ask? An oscillating tool is a compact, portable power tool that accepts a wide range of interchangeable blades, which can be used to sand, cut, scrape, grind and polish. The blade vibrates—or oscillates—back and forth at very high speed, making the tool much easier and safer to use than a circular saw, reciprocating saw, or even a jigsaw. It’ll slice through virtually any building material, including wood, metal, drywall, cement, mortar, plastic, and fiberglass. And, a multi-tool will work in places other power tools wouldn’t dare go, including narrow spaces, tight corners, and awkward angles.

It’s good enough to outline the box on the wood. Then continue with a multi tool. Easy, & clean process. Thanks for the vid!

I found the technique on these outlet-cutter boxes is that rocking back and forth is not enough, you actually need to pull out a little to let the dust clear out, and then resume the cut. Doing this every few seconds makes the tool work much faster.

I think the big advantage getting the Bauer box tool as opposed to the plunge cut is you don’t have to worry about plunging into something you might not know what’s in the wall. You can guess and calculate all you want but there are things that hide in the walls. Unless if it’s brand new drywall and you know exactly where everything is. Great video Chris 👍

Thanks for testing on wood. Replacing outlets in our house. Previous owners installed paneling over drywall and didn't cut all outlets properly. Used a blade for cutting outlets but finally caught myself and switched to my multi-tool. Lack the same level of control with my MT compared to blade. Would be nice to have a tool that took some of the guess work out of the cuts. Guess I'll have to hit up the Ace and just find better mt wood attachments.

Most OSB for walls are 7/16 which for a newbie it might make sense to use the box tool first then switch to a plunge saw so your lines are strait on just a thought

No offense but I showed ur vid to my boss and he said he'd fire you if you took over 15 seconds to cut out outlet hole with ocilating tool and I agreed. Also the half moon blade at an angle cuts outlet holes much better then the regular blades. Still thanks for video.

I do a large amount of remodeling, and this works good for me, as the sheetrock is already in place, and hard to know exactly what is behind it. I also have a jig that doesn't let it jump and damage the already finished wall. Quick and easy.

These are a great idea. I do low voltage security systems, alarms etc. I do have to put a lot of mud rings im drywall and the best advance this thing is is that it has a flat surface and it's easy to level.

We always used a jig saw if it's on the saw horses, and if it's already hanging, we used a rotozip to cut any box holes.

Just a thought, use the box cut out on the wood to score the surface then switch to the plunge blade for the actual cut to get the speed and precision.

Where was this when I used to do remodeling. That will be used a lot by someone . Any tool that makes the job easier is worth trying out

He said this will save time. I work at icon modular homes and I can probably cut out like 4 recep boxes in the time this takes to do 1 with a drywall hand saw.

That’s a nice tool for someone who doesn’t know to much.I do drywall work every day and I still would rather use a blade and saw.

Great review. Thanks for bringing this tool forward.

At the 7:00 mark the whole is clearly oversize by about a half inch and the box is rattling around. You might also consider using the tool at 7:47 with something other than a 6" blade.

This is okay for an after thought application, but for new construction where boxes are already nailed to the studs, a regular router bit would be best

What's the oscillations per minute on that tool your using Chris?

I do drywall quite a bit at work I wonder how many cuts this is good for... most of the time I'm cutting around boxes though which I think this would not really work well for lol

I like that I should be able to operate it with one hand and hold a vacuum hose there with the other.
