Love the work that you've put in to show stuff like this I have always wondered myself on how much difference the spark output on a ignition box was you covered all angles absolutely perfect

I bought my buddy's sbc 400 after the race season years ago. We rebuilt it, and I put it in my camaro. It would get to 5500 RPMs and misfire like it was starving for fuel. I replaced the ignition coil and module with an MSD 6AL and a remotely mounted blaste coil that came as a kit. The next time I got on it, she zinged to 8k in a flash doing a rolling burnout! After a few of those incidents, I stuck a 6500 rpm limiter in the box. 13.5 compression is harder to light off under a load. To this day, there's still not a whole lot of info on the subject, thanks for this video.

back in the early 2000's I worked on a boat with two 427 fords, it was always hard starting with even new dual points. I added a then available crane HI box to the points and it I could hit both keys and they'd start and idle down near instantly. idling at 500 rpm in gear swinging big props. guessing the same results here.

The biggest difference a MSD ignition box does it ads spark duration, a stock ignition delivers it's voltage over a 2 degree of duration the MSD box delivers it's voltage over a 20 degree duration using multiple sparks of it's maximum power. Which in layman's terms gives the fuel mixture much more time to get complete combustion.

Awesome video man...
My 17 yr old son & I were trying to decide how & what to upgrade his stock 84 w100 ram truck. Spent the better half of a day talking to friends which build hot rods, race cars, & General mechanics. And was more confused than when I started. I’ve worked on my factory vehicles all my life but never done any real upgrades. I bought him this truck which had 71k original miles on it for his 16th birthday. We have put patriot headers with true duals. And in the process of installing a new edelbrock intake & 650 carb. Alone with new value covers & upgraded air cleaner. And was trying to figure out which way to go with the distributor. And of course me being a single parent of two boys. I’m on a budget. But the time I’ve gotten to spent with my son on his truck is priceless. Thanks for the great information & God Bless you & your family.

Awesome effort. Thank you very much. I run an MSD 6A with an MSD High Vibration coil. I admit that I didn’t realize the difference in spark! Thanks, again. 1978 Ferrari 308 GTS

Wow, what an incredible video, thank you so much! MSD owes you big time for teaching us what we needed to know about their products!

So glad that these videos are left up and viewable for long periods. I’m getting tired of the factory Ignition Control Modules that are now made by inferior manufacturing methods. Back in the day an ignition module was far more dependable than todays offerings. I’m going to go with the MSD Ultra 6A with my factory distributor and an MSD coil. I’m looking forward to a performance and dependability advantage. One thing I would have liked to see in your demonstration would have been a gap widening on the plug so the MSD could really show its potential. Thank You for the effort!

When I worked at a speed shop, we had a demo display that showed the difference between stock and MSD spark. Quite a difference! We would see how far we could gap the plug and the spark still jump the gap. We were able to open it up pretty wide! 😆

Great video and showing how much more effective the MSD ignition is. I never realized how much more efficient this ignition is until seeing you video. I complained to my Jeep mechanic how the exhaust manifold on my 258 inline 6 was cracking and leaking where everything collected. I tried headers and they eventually burned out too. His explanation was that with the stock intake manifold the front and back cylinders run a little lean, the next two cylinders are normal mixture and the middle two run extra rich and never burn all of the fuel inside the cylinders. This dumps fuel and flame into the exhaust causing it to eventually crack and leak. He said if I put the MSD ignition system on my 6 cylinder I’d see complete fuel burn in all cylinders and I’d realize more power and efficiency. His explanation may have been over simplified on what’s going on with my exhaust but it helped.

I have a 72 240z with Triple Mikuni carbs. I've read all the theory on CDI ignition boxes and understood in concept how they are better, but this shows how well they amplify ignition and spark. I think based on this I'll definitely get 1 for my Z, will probably also result in cleaner burn and less fume smells too.

Nice!!! I had an old Crane Hi-6 on my coupe but it went back and I’ve just been using the stock ignition. However I’ve had another box just sitting around I may throw one back on the car now. It’s nice to be able to physically see the difference. Thanks and keep up the great videos!

I know this is an old video now, but I'd just like to say, that this video was a great demonsttration, I've seen some improvements with fancy high falootin coils back in the day, but nothing as dramatic as that MSD box, that was truly surprising the difference it made. Thanks for taking the time to set it up o/

Thanks for showing this I have a 1975 Ford Maverick I'm definitely putting the MSD on that.

I have a 5.7 Vortec Chevrolet & am convinced my old MSD 6A analog ignition box helps burn off the oil fouling off my cylinder #7. I've been monitoring it for years with no change. But the MSD helps burn the oil off the one plug that gives me a little problem.

Thankyou for taking the time and sharing this enlightening information.

I put an MSD box, coil and wires on my '85 5.0L (last of the Holley 4bbl Mustangs) wayyyy back when.
It definitely started quicker and had a smoother idle.
Never compared the factory ignition to the new MSD at the dragstrip because I made other mods at the same time that I installed the MSD system.

Well I think you have convinced me I need this for my 69 Chevelle, great illustration.
Thanks
