I challenge those commenting negatively here to provide a well thought out reason as to why GMO's should not be used or eaten by us. Help the discussion, don't turn yourself off to it.

For all the people pulling out their shill comments, I have a question: Are you calling him (and other commenters) shills because you have the evidence that proves it, or because the only reason you can come up with someone having an opposing view from yours is that they must be getting paid?

When you eat something, you don't somehow acquire its genetic code. Nutrients are nutrients. It doesn't actually matter if the genetic code of a tomato is slightly different, so long as it doesn't cause it to be toxic (which it doesn't in GMO made for human consumption).

GMO might be safe but the handful of businesses who are controlling the crop is the dangerous part. In future when no organic seeds will exist and these gmo companies like monsanto will rule us because nobody can live without food.

I can't stand behind this, many European countries will not accept American grown GMO's because of their unknown chemical composition. Furthermore to support big farm, is a slight to many mom and pop "natural" growers, who are almost always out priced, and forced to use the seeds provided my Monsanto, leading to no variation between crop yields. This then highlights another fault with GMO's the nearly identical DNA they all share. If a crop superbug was to hit the breadbasket of America, assuming a majority of Farmers there use GMO seeds, their crops would be killed off, and little grain, or wheat, etc would be produced creating a countrywide food shortage, and farther reaching affects to truck drivers, bakers, consumers, etc.

I wonder how many of these haters have a real degree in any field of STEM??.... my guess would be 0.

It's unbelievable to me how many people seem to be completely close-minded about this issue.  There's no authority you can appeal to that would change their minds, no matter how well respected, smart or unbiased they may be.  Which is ironic almost to the point of absurdity when you realize that the loudest anti-GMO voices all have little to no understanding or experience with basic agronomy, horticulture or genetic engineering... even more seem to misunderstand how modern scientific theory is used to develop a scientific consensus.

Thinking global warming/climate change is a hoax is about as scientifically valid as claiming GMOs are harmful to the environment and people.  If you believe this is a conspiracy, you're claiming that millions of "shills" are in on it, from the evil corporations who develop the seeds (which include companies not named Monsanto, believe it or not), to the FDA and EPA who regulate all new varietals, to the hundreds of thousands of farmers in America who are willingly planting toxic or harmful crops knowing the food it will produce will harm or kill us all.  How fucking delusional do you have to be to think that all of those people are doing something they all know to be evil?  You people are out of your GD'ed minds.

we have been genetically modifying plants since men first starting planting seeds. Its a non issue. It amazes me that people concern themselves with things like GMO's but will drive a car, drink alcohol, smoke, sky dive, over eat, not exercise, bungie jump, cross the street, eat lollipops, play with guns, interact with police, swim, go to sporting events, etc, all of which are infinitely more dangerous than GMO's. People love to fear, especially things that arent actually going to kill them, its more fun

The problem is not GMO themselves. As someone who claims facts and exactitude, you didn't even mention the main reason for which a lot of people are against GMO : pesticides. A lot of mosanto seeds are not modified to resist to some diseases like you said, but firstly to resist to mosanto's pesticides (both are sold together btw). Yes, GMO might not be dangerous themselves (I personally believe they are not), but the GMO's culture is actually dangerous : pollution of the soil through the use of very strong pesticides in high quantity, allowed by the chemical-immunity of the seeds.
And please, don't use this ridiculous argument of starving African children, that's just indecent. As one of the country who has the highest meet consumption per citizen, there is much more room for improvement there than with mosanto's GMO. You know, this fact that we actually produce enough cereals/vegetables to feed the whole world, if it wasn't for our beefs.

Why would GMO's fix global poverty? If people don't have access to regular foods, how will GMO's help? Where are the desert oranges he was talking about? Do they work? Are they nutritious?

People are not hungry because of lack of food supply, it is lack of profitability in selling them food. Social irresponsibility built into capitalist values causes hunger, not lack of technology.

The gmo debate is not over, whether you want to accept it or not gmo crops and industrial farming in general are linked to environmental problems, for example, "super weeds" and "super bugs" are now a result of gm, insects and weeds are essentially evolving to these gm crops as so are the weeds, and coming back stronger the benifits from these crops diminish greatly if not lost all together. We really need to stop thinking that gm crops are the best that we can do. there are many systems and methods we can put into place, Proper tillage methods, cover crops, companion crops, permaculture methods. are just a few examples of things that we can do that we just are not doing. I find this a huge problem with people involved in this debate, how little they know about agriculture in general and the overwhelming different methods we can use that wont set us up for problems down the line like we are already seeing and wont cause extreme negative impacts on the planet like we are also seeing with industrial farming in general.

This is somewhat of a strawman argument here:

From what I have researched, I see less of a problem with the actual genetic engineering itself, but more of a problem with what they are modifying and for what reason...the #1 alteration is making the crops resistant to RoundUp so they can douse them pesticides

THAT is the issue educated people have with GMOs

Okay.   You eat them.  I prefer not to...and also would like them to be labeled as such.  Unsubbed.
