Critiquing Eddie Hall's Strongman Diet

Eddie Hall had a diet that wasn’t for the faint of heart. The 2017 worlds strongest man winner ate an inhuman amount of food, and I’m going to critique the usefulness, the amount of food and the overall quality of this gargantuan diet.

Great, now you're going to have to box him.

I'm glad such a major player in strongman is calling out the whole 'EPIC ten-BAZILLION-calorie full-day-of-eating' trend. As it happens, Eddie himself has gone on record saying he didn't actually eat this much *every single day*. He tried it for one day as a test during his time competing, then went to bed feeling extremely ill and decided never to do it ever again. Like with a lot of strongman content: it's all marketing.

most people do lie about it, just putting up high numbers to get the clicks. Remember the days where people video constantly where 10K calorie diet, then 13K calorie diet, then 20K calorie diet!
but an actually 12K calorie diet is insane. it is hard for me to imagin how much food that is, A video does not do it justice

From memory, whenever he was interviewed he said he ate 10-12, 000 calories a day

Really thrilled to have an eloquent and civilised bloke like Mitchell at the top of the sport. Just shows that it’s far better to take a more scientific and educated approach to becoming the world’s strongest man, rather than pointlessly eating far too much.

Just a comment about BMR calculation for anyone looking into it. The Harris-Benedict equation is most accurate in general population and was also based primarily in north america. If you have a low bf% and high muscle mass the Cunningham or Katch-McArdle equations are probably going to be more accurate but they do require your lean body mass. Oxford is also the standard equation used for general population in Europe (only one I've ever used for GP as a sports scientist in Ireland), the sample size was 100 times as large and more diverse than Harris-Benedict.

But with all BMR calculations, your milage may vary. Ideally either have it lab tested or use your daily/weekly body weight and calorie tracking to determine maintenance and adjust from there.

Love seeing these kinds of videos, I don’t think I’ve ever seen another strongman focus so much on science and evidence based training, most people just seem to bully weights around and eat whatever they want. I’m never going to be a strongman but you’re helping me become the strongest man I can be, keep it up!

Normally I don’t watch the videos where Mitch just talks but I watched this one from beginning to end without interruption. Super interesting video 🔥

Every time I hear about Eddie’s diet another 1000 calories are added. In his 2017 interview he is quoted saying he ate 10, 000-12, 000 calories a day. 16, 000 sounds ridiculous

I'm curious about how many times he shitted per day. Bulking up is so damn hard on the digestive system

I'm glad someone called this out. I'm not here to sh*t on Eddie, he was an amazing strongman but the one thing he does do it massively exaggerate things. He's one of those strongmen that made the eating side of it ridiculous and probably put off a lot of people from wanting to train strongman.

Can you please organize a strong man eating competition

You missed out a lot of the food he eats, for example, what about the sausages, black pudding & beans from his breakfast?

Eddie only had 1 WSM, as he said, was too hard on his body. I never believed he needed to weigh 440 lbs. Yet, it worked for him. Static monster, but still moved well. Amazing.

The massive amount of Gear probably ups the calorie burn in building and maintaining that level of muscle mass.

One thing I really love about my good friend Mitch is that his videos ALWAYS show some kind of support, studies, books, experts' opinions and of course his judgement as an athlete and likely his professional background. He has also a degree. I think his perspectives on his videos give a fair balance between health and fitness, which not necessarily align these days. Eg. being fit/strong don't necessarily mean being healthy

How many of the fitness and internet names you know provide such support in their "expert views" of whatever topic they speak bout. I can probably count them with fingers. Most of them probably don't even like to read, except news of their respective sport. I thin this is of such tremendous value for us because it is education to improve and awareness of our health. Most of these guys speak I think speak and recommend based on their personal experience and pretend to know when they are not.

Personally I find hard to believe and even question sometimes the information these guys, fitness guys give and show...so we have to be careful to what he hear and see on the Internet and for those who have kids, make sure to supervise what they do

I know this may be irrelevant but just incase you weren't aware a flapjack is oats, butter and honey/sugar. its almost equal parts. Not totally sure what an oat bar is made of but hopefully a healthier balance !

Something is not adding up. You said his Cranberry juice and nuts meal was 144g of carbs. He is drinking Ocean Spray Cranberry Classic 1 Litre which is 43g of carbs per liter and he had 2 60 g Tesco Cashew Nuts Snack Pack 60G which would be 14.8g carbs for each one. That meal had 57.8 grams of carbs in total.
