Also known "Scrooge" (1951), directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, is a timeless cinematic adaptation of Charles Dickens' beloved novella "A Christmas Carol." The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly and bitter old man, who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley on Christmas Eve. Marley warns Scrooge that he will suffer a similar fate unless he changes his ways.

Throughout the night, Scrooge is visited by three spirits—the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. These spectral guides take him on a journey through time, showing him scenes from his own past, the joyous and festive present, and the bleak future that awaits if he doesn't embrace the spirit of Christmas.

As Scrooge witnesses the impact of his actions on those around him, he undergoes a transformation, rediscovering the true meaning of Christmas and the importance of compassion, generosity, and goodwill toward others.

"Scrooge" is celebrated for its faithful and heartwarming portrayal of Dickens' classic tale, with Alastair Sim delivering a memorable performance as the iconic Ebenezer Scrooge. The film has become a holiday classic, cherished by audiences for its enduring message of redemption, the spirit of Christmas, and the possibility of personal transformation.

Watched this because a Website rated it the #1 Scrooge. It did not disappoint and the message was not watered down but spoke redemptive truths.

This is the absolute best version of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Alistair Sims portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge is absolutely beautiful. Also the inclusion of the Gospel in the telling of this story is wonderful

The scene with Scrooge and his maid after he changes is beyond great.

What makes this version stand out more than any other is the little things, case in point, when the Ghost of Christmas Past and Scrooge are in the bedroom of Fan, after young Scrooge has left, her final words "....watch over Fred for me, Ebeneezer..." then she dies, the Ghost of Christmas Past says..."You heard her." then Scrooge' anquish when he says, "Forgive me Fan, forgive me Fan, forgive me..." Heartbreaking. It truly is one of my favorite versions of this Holiday classic.

I still tear up when Scrooge begs forgiveness from Fred's wife.

Add me to the list of the "seniors" who love this movie. At 72, I still enjoy this movie which I have watched each year at a much younger age! Thank you.

Sim's captured the true essence of Scrooge; he wasn't greedy or nasty he was simply terrified of being hurt again. Sim's skillfully and subtly takes Scrooge through various transformations and you feel the battle he has with himself as layer upon layer of self-protection is removed and the real man slowly emerges (even his "humbug" moment reveals he knows deep down that his disdain for Christmas is something he doesn't really believe is true)

2nd to none. I have watched this version many times, and I can not find a major flaw in it. A true classic. Every expression, every word, every shot, every line is near perfect. Played so perfectly that when I watch it, I get caught up in it, thinking I am watch a true life story. These actors are immersed in the characters. Awesome !

I used to watch this version all the time when my grandmother would visit for Christmas, still watch it every year to keep her memory alive.

And even so this is without a doubt the best adaption of the classic story.

The preeminent Christmas film for all of time. Unsurpassed and unmatched. Alastair Sim set the bar far too high and no one has come close to the character of Scrooge. Truly a masterpiece.

Even when he's playing Scrooge, Alastair Sim brings a smile to your face.

Heard lots of folks say that watching "It's a Wonderful Life" is a Christmas must BUT this, for me, is the quintessential Christmas movie. Alistair Sim is an absolute joy to watch and this version far exceeds all subsequent versions (in my opinion).
