When Gus Mancuso looks at Jim's pod and why it failed, he said that the reason for him waking up early was a burnt out clock chip, meaning there is no backstory or hidden motive in the avalon.

Having only seen the movie once, my theory is after the meteor shower that started the cascade failure the ships computer knew it needed to be repaired and going through the records discovered Jim was the best choice because A: not only was he a more than competent engineer but B: he was expendable

Before you even talk about access, if the ship choose Jim to wake up, why didn't the ship itself tell Jim what the problem is, and ask his help to fix it. the ship could have said "hi Jim I woke you up coz I can't fix this myself. so here's what you do. blah blah. when you're done, don't worry you just have get in the Autodoc and I'll put you back to sleep" something that took 2 years to fix would have only needed 2 hours.

Good theory, although it does raise another question. If the ship knew who to wake up, why did it not notify said people what the problem was. Jim spent a lot of time alone, not doing anything. Or did other ship systems fail, before the ship could tell the people what the problem is.
Pretty sure not even the movie's writers went into detail about that.

Wouldn't they have developed maintenance robots? Humans are weak and ill-suited for space flight. AIso, for a ship that big, I expect more than just one medical pod.

If they shared the last pod and taken turns of 60 days at a time they both would be ageing effectively 60 times slower and they both could have gotten to the new planet being only 25-30 years older

Omg. I never thought of this, but this makes SO much sense. WTF why wasn't this revealed?? It's even hinted at in the trailers and tagline "There's a reason we/they woke up early" - I was expecting some sort of conspiracy to be revealed but nothing happened and I never thought of this. But damn this ties up the story in such a satisfying way! And it's a secret directive like A-113 which isn't inherently malicious, but is deemed necessary, even if tragically so. Thank you so much for making this video! This is my head canon. I wish the film hadn't been so romantically fairytale-like in its ending.

you didnt watch the movie properly - the damage caused included reactor damage, and other systems and pods. Jim's pod could not be fixed, so it opened. Watch it again, properly.

Jim's pod got damaged, that is the reason of it opening.

Perhaps the ship did not deliberetly wake Jim up but it is possible the ship is programmed with all the passengers information. When there was a power failure it probably had a short period of time to choose which pod to shut power down to. Its possible it saw Jim as the mechanic and chose that pod was the best to shut down knowing He may have a better survival chance.

I hadn't thought of that before! Passengers is one of my favorite movies of all time so this really meant a lot to me. Never realized before (I don't know why) the tremendous coincidence and odds that would've had to be in play for Chris Pratt's character (being a mechanic) being the "lucky" one to be woken up by "mistake!" Excellent video!

A few problems.
1) The opening scene clearly shows that the computer is going through and fixing problems aboard the ship. It is able to fix them one by one and is unable to fix a pod. So the occupant of that pod is woken up. Now you allude to the law of averages, but even with averages you sometimes hit something lucky. The pod occupant could just have easily been a non-technical person and the ship would have just malfunctioned until that crew member was awoken two years later.
2) There is no indication that there is an A.I. aboard the Avalon, and there's a difference between a computer who can run through routines to fix problems and an A.I. who can deliberately get the mechanic that the ship needs to fix the problem.
3) Even if there was an A.I. then as has been pointed out the A.I. should have at least communicated with the pod occupant to let them know that help was needed.
4) They specifically point out the hubris of the company by stating that the pods don't malfunction. This was a company that relied on that fact and so no contingencies were put into place in case one did to revive a crew member and get the pod fixed and put the passenger back to sleep. No, everything that happened after he woke up relied on that hubris from the pre-set program that greeted him to the directory that could not actually help him. If the company had coded in and relied on an A.I. being able to make the decision to wake up a crew member or passenger to help it then the company would have also put in contingency plans for that possible eventuality.

Lmao I just watched the movie and it says why Jim woke up, a chip was burnt or something

good video. my only question would be: why didn't they have a damage control team on board just for these kind of emergence's? Every ship, military and civilian have people in the crew trained for damage control and repair. sounds like someone got cheap and tried to impress their boss's by saving money on a vital issue.

Well, the ship should have woken up the crews rather than Jim if the idea is to wake up someone who can directly fix the ship.

I've haven't seen the movie yet but I find this movie very similar to a book I read called Across the Universe by Beth Revis. There's three books and I only read the first but it was mainly about a huge space ship transporting people from earth to a new planet. All like the important people are asleep in pods for the journey but the ship is maintained by a group of people who have lived on the ship generation after generation. One young man who is training to be the leader sees a beautiful girl in the pod storage area and wakes her up because after years of interbreeding on this ship everyone looks the same and this girl is pretty with white skin and red hair. She's not happy about it to say the least, her parents are still in their pods and she basically will never be with them again. Anyway it turns out the ship is malfunctioning and all that good stuff so they have to figure out away around that. I honestly thought this was an adaptation of that book with all the similarities, but sadly no. I can't wait to see this movie though. :)

Why didnt the ship wake up a crew member, they had all the access and new what to do with that knowledge. Without Fishburn's character even Jim was clueless
