rules of the monarchy that Princess Diana broke

The rules of the monarchy that Princess Diana broke and then Catherine and Meghan. First, Diana removed from her centuries-old vows the words about submission to her husband. After that, neither Catherine nor Meghan said those words in their vows. Two, women in the royal family cannot wear coloured tights. Bare feet are also unacceptable. Diana broke this rule regularly. Katherine sometimes allowed herself to wear tight black tights, while Meghan walked around with bare legs, for which she was criticised. Third, royal ladies are not allowed to paint their nails in bright colours. They don't paint their nails at all or prefer nude colours on short nails. Diana broke this rule frequently and walked around with red nail polish. Catherine also rarely appeared with brightly coloured nails, but Meghan regularly appeared with bright or dark nails, which caused discontent.

Such antiquated rules, made by an elderly lady based on her personal preferences. Restricted nail polish color and hosiery? Give me strength.

It’s a work place dress code.
King George V didn’t like dark varnish on ladies, the Queen Mother/George IV agreed and QEII stuck with it. King Charles doesn’t, so royal ladies can do other things.

Catherine has started wearing trousers on public engagements, which look great on her. Something not done under Queen Elizabeth II's reign.

Bare legs was just a little too much. MM flaunted it every chance she had, and it didn’t matter if she upset HRM Queen Elizabeth, or foreign dignitaries (like wearing her hair out when she was to be wearing a head covering…yes, it was covered, but only on top of the head). Even in her recent trip to Nigeria..as a NON Royal..she dressed inappropriately to the point of being given clothing to cover herself up.

If you get upset because a woman is wearing colored nail polish, you need to evaluate your life.

The rules are meant to look ‘timeless’ and aristocratic. They are meant to avoid wearing something flashy or trendy which takes away from the event and makes it about someone’s nail polish color or tights.

I do think the Queen had some very strict rules for dress that reflected the time period when she grew up. Remember there were no pantyhose invented back in the time when the Queen came of age. When I was in high school from 1960 to 1964 we still had to wear a girdle with supporters to hold up our stockings. The supporters dug into your thighs and left indentations on your legs. In 1963 I think that was when they started selling black hosiery and when we tried to wear them and culottes the Principal and Vice-Principal objected and we got in big trouble, for some odd reason they thought it wasn’t appropriate attire. The culottes prevented the boys from looking up under our skirts as we walked down the multi-story staircases that made it very easy for the boys to catch a peek. The black hose also were heavier and warmer when we had to wait for the bus freezing our legs off because they were exposed because we couldn’t wear slacks. They were very cruel to girls. I don’t understand Meghan liking bare are legs because you rub blisters on your feet worse. But her legs are sufficiently tan and she has bunions and damaged toes from wearing the shoes she wears. The Queen probably wouldn’t have liked my shoes that I wore either because I have never liked pointed toe pumps. I’ve seen Catherine has damaged her toes too. Shoe designers hate women. We need rounded toes to allow the toes wiggle room and lower heels that don’t drive the foot forward being shoved ina narrow pointed space. If the Queen wanted clear or pale nail polish that was fine for a woman of her age but to expect the young women to follow that is a little unreasonable. I don’t like black polish though, sorry Meghan is looks too evil and dark. I don’t like blue or other weird colors like yellow or green or orange. I have worn a pearlescent white before a long time ago. But my hands looks old now so I don’t call attention to them now.

She broke rules with class as does Princess Catherine. Meghan Markle didn’t hold the post long enough to even have an opinion. She had no intention of doing the “royal” once she realized her place in line…seems just so sad for Prince Harry because I think he did really want to have his family and his royal status

I know that the royal family has "special rules" but at the end of the day they are no different then any of us as long as they aren't revealing anything they should where what they want

Modernize with moderation, maybe restrict colors not appropriate but colored nail polish, colored tights, etc adds to their happiness while being relate able. It's all an expression of who they are, the function they attend, their frame of mind on that particular day or upcoming functions. Though their outfits are jaw dropping, it's also within restriction. Flexibility for the century would be so exciting with great anticipation of their head to toe outfit for that day/evening function. More affordable to buy a bottle of colored nail polish like theirs if that's more affordable at the time. 😊

After her divorce, Diana was no longer constrained by the rules.
